The 200bhp engine that powers the new Peugeot 208 GTi and RCZ Sports Coupé has just been awarded the ‘International Engine of the Year’ award in the 1.4-litre to 1.8-litre category during a ceremony in Stuttgart, Germany.

Presented by Engine Technology International magazine, the 2013 award went once again to the accomplished 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection turbo petrol engine developed in cooperation by PSA Peugeot Citroën and BMW Group.

The award particularly honours the 200bhp engine which also powers models in the 308 line-up (GT and Coupé Cabriolet), and delivers its turbocharged output of 147kw (200bhp) and peak torque of 275Nm, with carbon emissions of just 139g/km on the Peugeot 208 GTi.

The 1.6-litre version caps an entire family of petrol powerplants, ranging from 1.4-litres to 1.6-litres and from 95 to 200bhp. Equipped with the latest technologies, including direct injection on the turbo version, variable valve timing, a volume flow-controlled oil pump and an on-demand water pump, the family improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions by around 10% compared with the previous generation.

The engine family, produced at the Française de Mécanique plant in Douvrin, France, now forms the core of Peugeot’s petrol range.
