2010 Volvo XC60 With the launch of the new XC60 for 2010, Volvo boldly conquests one of the fastest growing market segments - the "Small Premium Utility." Revolutionary styling, world-class safety features, dynamic performance and outstanding comfort combine to make the XC60 an excellent value. As the most attainable member of Volvo's XC family - including the XC70 and XC90 - the XC60 is designed to captivate a new generation of Volvo buyers as well as attracting those who are loyal to the brand. From every angle, the XC60's dramatic style takes Volvo design DNA to the next level by artfully blending muscular lower body cues capped off by a sporty coupe-like greenhouse. The XC60 features a charismatic strong shoulder line while adding more expressive design elements front and rear. A new trapezoidal grille wears an enlarged Volvo iron mark for instant brand recognition whether it's filling the rearview mirror of the car in front or facing the rigors of a daily commute. For added distinction, the rear liftgate design, inspired by the Volvo C30, is flanked by LED taillamps that illuminate the full shape of the shoulder line. The XC60 is offered in a single well-equipped T6 AWD model. Volvo's engineering expertise endows the XC60 with a powerplant that provides the best of all worlds - strong performance, reduced emissions and efficient fuel economy. A 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine produces 281 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft of torque. Power is transferred to the ground via a six-speed "Geartronic" automatic transmission and Volvo's renowned All-Wheel Drive with Instant TractionTM. Large 18-inch wheels (19 inches optional) along with 9.1 inches of ground clearance enable the XC60 to traverse terrain that would be impossible in a conventional passenger car. Enhanced Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) is standard along with a new feature called Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) that helps provide more stable driving when towing. Continuing Volvo's quest as a pioneer and leader in vehicle safety systems, the XC60 introduces a new world's first. City Safety is a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions occurring at speeds of 19 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the XC60 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact. The XC60's cabin reflects the dynamic energy generated by the exterior. Volvo's signature ultra-slim center control panel receives a fresh design with a new (optional) integrated navigation screen that's angled slightly toward the driver. Newly designed seats feature a pronounced X-theme to segue with the XC "Cross Country" moniker. Volvo's first panoramic roof is optional, offering increased light and an open-air feeling with two laminated glass panels. The XC60 is Volvo's first all-new carline to offer HD Radio as standard equipment updating radio to digital quality. FM broadcast quality improves to the level of a typical CD while AM broadcast quality is improved to the prior level of FM. The XC60's standard high performance sound system includes AUX and USB inputs to allow connection and control of personal music devices such as iPodsTM, memory sticks and other media players. SiriusTM Satellite radio with a complimentary six-month subscription and Bluetooth hands-free phone interface are also standard. Audiophiles can select the optional Dynaudio® Premium Sound System with a 650-watt amplifier, 12 Dynaudio speakers and Dolby Pro-Logic II® Surround. Two new colors debuting on the XC60 include Lime Grass Green Pearl and Terra Bronze Pearl. The former can be paired with a unique Off-Black leather interior with Lemon Green accents on the seating surfaces and door trim panels to turn up the visual volume. Performance Plus
Every facet of the new 2010 XC60's powertrain and chassis has been designed to give the driver the utmost in satisfaction. The turbocharged powerplant provides the best of all worlds - segment-leading performance, reduced emissions and efficient fuel economy. Volvo's engineers have endowed the XC60 with a finely tuned suspension to provide both sporty handling and a smooth ride. "The new Volvo XC60 is designed for customers who impose high demands on the driving experience - whether the car is used in the city, on the highway or to negotiate tight curves in country lanes," says Lars Blenwall, project director for the XC60. "That is why we have focused on finding exactly the right balance between sportiness and comfort, for the chassis and for the car as a whole." The new Volvo XC60 is robustly built to handle all operating conditions. The body is exceptionally rigid, while the sporty chassis setup enables the car to be precisely controlled to minimise roll tendencies in demanding driving situations. Weight is optimally distributed between the front and rear axles, which contributes to superb balance and traction. The transversely installed engine and Volvo's all-wheel drive with Instant TractionTM from Haldex contribute to well-balanced control and smoothness of operation. Standard 18-inch wheels (19 inches optional) and 9.1 inches of ground clearance mean the Volvo XC60 is capable of traversing terrain that would be impossible for a conventional passenger car. The rear suspension ensures good comfort and road contact even when the going gets rough. The McPherson front suspension and wide track also contribute to excellent directional stability. "The XC60 handles sharply and behaves exactly as you would expect," says Blenwall. "It promotes a feeling of safety and control, and also of relaxed comfort." The Volvo XC60 offers a very high level of active safety. Apart from Volvo's all-wheel drive with Instant TractionTM, standard DSTC has been enhanced to better compensate for throttle lift-off situations. In addition there is a wide range of optional functions, including the all-new Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) which offers unbeatable control when towing a trailer. The braking system in the Volvo XC60 is based on the system used in the XC90. The powerful brakes in combination with the lower weight of the smaller vehicle means that braking performance is exceptional. Turbocharged T6 engine with top performance The T6 engine is based on Volvo's compact 3.2-liter in-line six all-aluminium engine that was introduced in the new Volvo S80 in 2008. The turbo version for the XC60, with a displacement of 3.0 liters, delivers 281 horsepower with torque of no less than 295 lb.-ft, combining for best-in-class performance. Maximum torque is available from just 1,500 rpm and remains on tap throughout the rev range. The result is swift acceleration and smooth driving. The turbo version has a somewhat smaller displacement owing to its slightly smaller bore and shorter stroke. However, this is compensated by the turbocharger, which in this engine takes in exhaust gases in two phases. Using what is known as twin-scroll technology, the inlet side has been divided into two sections of three cylinders each. This approach makes for a simpler, more compact turbocharger that provides very fast response, fully on par with the power typically delivered by twin turbochargers. The T6 engine is perfect for sporty driving. It has been programmed to provide the highest possible power with the lowest possible fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Like all Volvos, the new XC60 has a transversely mounted powertrain. Transverse installation gives the engine more space under the hood and helps reduce the risk of penetration into the passenger compartment in the event of a frontal collision. Six-speed Geartronic transmission The engine in the new Volvo XC60 is mated to a six-speed Geartronic transmission, offering drivers the choice of fully automatic or manual shift modes. The transmission has been designed to handle the output of the T6. Sixth gear is a pure overdrive ratio and offers relaxed, economical cruising. It also has a sport mode. Geartronic makes it possible to change gears manually should the driver prefer a sportier driving style or if he or she wants to hold onto a specific gear. All-wheel drive for sure-footed grip The Volvo XC60 is equipped as standard with Volvo's all-wheel drive with Instant TractionTM to ensure the best possible road grip whatever the situation. With the help of an electronically controlled clutch, the AWD system automatically distributes power between the front and rear wheels. The Instant Traction function shifts power from the front to the rear wheels at lightning speed, such as when starting from standstill on slippery or loose surfaces. HDC gives added control downhill Hill Descent Control (HDC) is Volvo's sophisticated technology for assisting slow progress in first gear when driving on steep grades. It's available as an option on the new XC60. Using the car's braking system and engine torque, HDC controls the car's speed to maintain a steady crawl. This leaves the driver free to focus solely on steering safely. HDC is activated via a button on the instrument panel. The driver can override HDC by pressing either the accelerator or brake pedal. Once another gear is selected, HDC is automatically disengaged. Enhanced DSTC function Volvo's DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) function has been further developed in the new Volvo XC60 in order to help providing even more stable driving. DSTC registers deviations between the driver's intended direction and the car's actual direction. The enhanced DSTC function registers the car's roll rate as well, giving the opportunity to detect slowly built up skids. This may occur if the driver suddenly releases the accelerator pedal while steering, like when leaving a highway slightly too late. By measuring the roll rate, the DSTC function is able to start the regulation at an earlier stage - and with greater precision. This is highly noticeable in dynamic driving where the car is exposed to high lateral forces. New Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) offers improved control The purpose of the new Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) function is to dampen the oscillation tendencies that can arise when towing a trailer. In certain conditions, there is a risk that the car and trailer might start swaying from side to side or "snaking," making it difficult for the driver to regain control. TSA operates together with enhanced DSTC to help stabilize the situation by braking one or more wheels while at the same time reducing the engine's torque. TSA operates on all road surfaces and can be specified as a separate active-safety option when purchasing a trailer hitch. RSC helps prevent roll-overs The XC60 is also equipped with Roll Stability Control (RSC) as standard. RSC is an active stability-enhancement system. If the system assesses that there is a considerable risk of a roll-over, the engine's torque is reduced and some braking power is directed to one or more wheels to help counter any tendency to roll over. Active chassis with Four C - and three distinct settings The Four-C option (late calendar-year 2009 availability) makes the Volvo XC60 extra comfortable, especially on rough roads. Volvo's Four-C is an advanced, self-regulating chassis system that uses a number of sensors to continuously monitor the car's behaviour. The dampers are adjusted to suit the current driving conditions in mere fractions of a second. Three chassis settings, Comfort, Advanced and Sport, allow the driver to adapt the chassis to suit road conditions at the touch of a button.
Revolutionary Styling
The XC60 makes Volvo's Scandinavian design heritage more emotional and radiant by adding sculptured, exciting shapes and innovative features. "This car is charged with more emotive form and far more energy than any previous Volvo model," says Steve Mattin, Volvo Cars Design Director. "It is the boldest crossover to date." Steve Mattin and his team have designed the XC60 with a very clearly defined goal. "We're elevating our design DNA to an entirely new level by literally turning up the visual volume," says Mattin. DNA = Dramatic New Approach "Historically, Volvo's interpretation of DNA signified 'Do Not Abandon' the design traditions," says Mattin. "We have now expanded its significance to redefine DNA as taking a Dramatic New Approach." Volvo' new XC60 premium crossover steps boldly into one of the toughest and fastest-growing segments - the "Small Premium Utility." As a crossover, it artfully blends a dynamic mix of two car styles. Down below, the unmistakable, immensely capable XC pumps up its muscles creating a strong athletic body that is mated with high ground clearance and large wheels. Up top the flowing lines create the sporty charisma of a coupe. "The XC60 is much more emotionally charged than its competitors in the segment," says Mattin. "It is seductive and packed with thrilling contrasts. Sleek yet muscular, powerful yet agile, large yet at the same time compact. The XC60 is actually 7.9 inches shorter than the XC70." New face expresses attitude and strength At the front the enlarged signature iron mark in the trapezoidal grille swiftly fills the rearview mirror of the car in front - a signal that Volvo's dynamic future has arrived. "The classic iron mark now gets the role it deserves - bold and packed with self-confidence," says Mattin. "It is precisely this bold approach that Volvo's brand name should have." The XC60 previews Volvo's new face, with attitude and strength, filled with expression and personality. The contours of the headlamps and the taut rearward flow of the fenders emphasize the hood's classic V-profile giving the front a wedge-shaped stance. "The expression 'the eyes are the mirror of the soul' is an excellent description of the headlamps' role," says Mattin. "The eyes reveal more about your personality than any other facial expression." The sculpted, seductive lines are evident when the XC60 is viewed from the side. The car's shoulders are exceptionally broad. Towards the front they're strengthened by a sculptural undercut. When it comes to the rear fenders, Mattin resorts to the sensually loaded adjective "voluptuous." The large wheels, bold wheel arches and the darker shade of the body's lower section further enhance the muscular XC feel. And the dynamic, flowing lines of the XC60's greenhouse combined with its daring roof contour impart a sporty coupe feel to the upper part of the car. Distinctive new rear light configuration At the rear the muscular shoulders are emphasized by the characteristic LED lights set into the tail lamps. For the first time in a Volvo, the rear position lights also serve as brake lights. The full shape of the shoulder lights up when braking, giving the XC60 an even stronger, more distinctive look. The third brake light becomes a sculptural part of the roof spoiler. On the tailgate, the Volvo badge appears in bolder, more widely spaced letters. To strengthen its crossover character the XC60 is available with a scuff plate for the rocker panels plus front and rear skid-plates that are integrated into the bumpers. "Another new feature is that the roof rails have actually been integrated into the roof," says Mattin. "This gives the car an unusually low and broad stance for a crossover." Interior focuses on the driver The new XC60 is packed with energy on the inside too. All the passengers sit comfortably in the newly designed seats, yet it's obvious that the driver is in charge. The characteristic slim center stack gains a fresh design with a new integrated navigation (optional) screen that's angled slightly toward the driver. "You should feel like a pilot at the controls of a business jet, with all your passengers sitting in First Class," noted Jonathan Disley, head of interior design for the new Volvo XC60. "You are seated in comfort, surrounded by ergonomically designed instruments and you really feel that you are on top of the traffic situation around you. The XC60 has more intelligent safety systems than any previous Volvo. That's why I want the entire driver's environment to radiate a high-tech feel." The interior also has been designed so every detail looks like it's in motion. Disley and his team have created this sense of energy by blending together a theme that can be called "thick-to-thin" which adds drama and excitement. "The recurrent asymmetrical look gives the interior a self-assured attitude, brimming with self-confidence," says Disley. "This feeling is reinforced by the well thought-out mix of contrasting materials, such as soft, warm, dark panels and hard, cold aluminum inserts." Unique seats The stitched seams of the unique, sculpted XC60 seats have a pronounced X-theme. "Cross Country, Cross City or Cross Over - choose the interpretation that suits you best," says Disley. The curvature of the forward edge of the rear seat cushion has been designed for easier entry and exit. The rear seat is also somewhat higher than the front seats to give its occupants a better view. The two outboard seats can be specified with the same two-stage child booster cushions that were introduced in the Volvo V70 and XC70 in 2007. The seats are available in a variety of colors and materials. "Choosing color and trim is about expressing your personality, so we have developed a rich palate of attributes that customers with a taste for individuality can select," says Anders Sachs, program chief designer color and trim for the XC60. The color and trim range includes a number of contrasting combinations. The highlight color for the XC60 is a new shade of green dubbed Lime Grass Green. "This color is designed to be seen - it has lots of attitude," commented Sachs. "The unique asymmetrical center console with its silk metal frame is finished in brushed aluminum but it is also available in wood emphasizing the authenticity of the material and our Scandinavian heritage." Terra Bronze Pearl and Lime Grass Green Pearl are two new and distinctive exterior colors available for the XC60. Panoramic roof The XC60 features Volvo's first panoramic roof. Available as a stand-alone option later in the model year, it includes two glass panels. The forward panel can be tilted for ventilation or it can slide rearward as with a conventional roof. Yet unlike the latter, the forward panel slides over the rear section of the vehicle's roof. Rear seat passengers can let the sun shine in thanks to a second stationary glass roof panel. Luggage Capacity The XC60's tailgate opening is the widest in the segment while the luggage capacity measures 30.8 cubic feet with the rear seat up. As in the V70 and XC70, the rear seat is a three-piece 40/20/40 split/fold design. Each section folds down easily to create a totally flat cargo platform for maximum flexibility.
HD RadioTM Technology Experience the Clarity of the Digital Revolution
The 2010 XC60 is the latest Volvo to receive HD Radio broadcasting as standard equipment (HD Radio technology is standard in all 2009 Volvos except the S60); updating the traditional radio transmission signal to digital quality. Equipped with the HD Radio system, XC60 owners will enjoy a higher-quality AM/FM radio that features more channel choices, crystal-clear sound and new data services. FM broadcast quality improves to the level of a typical CD, while AM broadcast quality is improved to the prior level of FM. Volvo became the first automaker to announce that it will have HD Radio receivers as standard equipment in most models. "Our drivers expect the highest quality in every aspect of their vehicles," says Doug Speck, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. HD Radio technology is the most significant advancement in radio broadcasting since the introduction of FM. Across the United States, more than 1800 AM and FM stations are broadcasting using HD Radio technology and more than 900 are offering subscription-free HD2/3 multicast channels on the FM dial. These channels feature fresh new music, sports, and news formats, showcase young artists and local bands, as well as air non-English language programming and more. City Safety
Continuing Volvo's quest as a pioneer and leader in vehicle safety systems, the 2010 XC60 introduces a new world's first. City Safety is a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions occurring at speeds of 19mph or less. City Safety in combination with the recently introduced Collision Warning with Auto Brake means that Volvo now offers functions for auto-braking at all speeds. Surveys indicate that 75 percent of all reported collisions take place at speeds of up to 19 mph. In half of these cases the driver has not braked at all before the collision, mainly due to distraction. In these cases, City Safety could make a crucial difference. City Safety automatically applies the brakes if the driver is about to drive into the vehicle in front. A collision may be entirely avoided, or if this is not possible, the damage to cars and people can be reduced. "City Safety is yet another example of Volvo's ambition to tackle real-life traffic situations when developing solutions aimed at preventing accidents," says Jonas Ekmark, manager of Preventive Safety at Volvo Car Corporation's Safety Center. "We're proud to offer City Safety as a standard feature in the new Volvo XC60." Active at speeds of up to 19 mph City Safety is active at speeds of up to 19 mph. If the vehicle in front brakes suddenly and City Safety determines that a collision is likely, the brakes are pre-charged. If the driver fails to respond, the car applies the brakes automatically. If the relative speed difference between the two vehicles is less than 9 mph then City Safety may help the driver to entirely avoid the collision. Between 9 and 19 mph the focus is on reducing speed as much as possible prior to the impact. Laser sensor monitors traffic in front City Safety keeps an eye on traffic in front with the help of a laser sensor that is integrated into the top of the windshield at the height of the rearview mirror. It can detect vehicles and other objects up to 18 feet in front of the XC60's bumper. City Safety is developed to react to vehicles in front that are either at a standstill or are moving in the same direction as the XC60. Based on the gap to the vehicle in front and the car's own speed, the system makes 50 calculations a second to determine what braking force is needed to avoid a collision. If the calculated braking force exceeds a certain level without the driver responding, the system determines that the risk of a collision is imminent. City Safety helps either avoid or reduce the severity of the collision by automatically applying the brakes and reducing the throttle opening. At the same time, the brake lights are activated to warn other traffic. System limitations City Safety works equally well during the day and night. However, the laser sensor has the same limitations as all optical technologies in that the detection capacity can be limited by fog, snow or heavy rain. It is therefore necessary to keep the windshield free of dirt, ice or snow. The sensor area is covered by the windshield wipers, yet the driver should pay extra attention in keeping the sensor area clean at all times. "It is important to understand that City Safety does not relieve the driver of the responsibility from maintaining a safe distance to avoid a collision," says Ekmark. "The automatic braking function does not react until it considers that a collision is imminent. City Safety will help to limit or reduce the consequences or completely avoid an imminent collision."
New function controls the restraint system in a collision In order to further boost safety and help reduce the risk of injuries, the laser sensor interacts with other on-board technology, controlling the airbags and adaptive seat belt load limiters to suit the severity of the collision. This technology, known as Pre-Prepared Restraints (PRS), is also being introduced with the new Volvo XC60. PRS forges a unique link between preventive systems (sensors) and protective safety systems. In case of a collision, the Restraint Control Module controls the deployment of the protective restraint systems. With the additional information supplied by the laser sensor the Restraint Control Module controls the adaptive seat belt load limiter depending on the severity of the collision. The potential of the adaptive seat belt load limiter to reduce injuries can therefore be further utilized. PRS is active at all speeds, unlike City Safety which only operates up to 19 mph. PRS is activated by means of a pyrotechnical device in the adaptive seat belt load limiter. This means that City Safety can be activated without PRS being activated, if the collision severity is lower than the level required for PRS activation. Additional new and enhanced safety functions Volvo is extending its safety offerings with two new functions that stabilize the car in critical situations.
