Motorcyclists and young drivers and are being reminded about the importance of looking after their tyres as part of this year’s Road Safety Week, which runs from 9th – 15th June.
The campaign, being organised by the Chief Fire Officers Association, is helping people to stay safe while on their travels in a variety of ways, which includes proper tyre care and maintenance.
“Well maintained tyres play a vital role in road safety, as they’re the only things keeping your car or motorcycle on the road,” explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “Neglecting them can result in reduced handling and grip or even a rapid deflation which is a huge safety risk. Thankfully though, with just a few regular checks, you can ensure your tyres will help to keep you safe.”
TyreSafe is recommending that during Road Safety Week, riders and drivers ACT to make three key inspections of their tyres.
Air pressures of tyres should be checked when the tyres are cold (i.e. travelled less than two miles) against the vehicle or bike manufacturers recommended settings.
Condition of tyres should be carefully inspected, looking out for any cuts, lumps or bulges in the tyre. The tread area should also be inspected for any signs of uneven wear with any embedded objects removed.
Tread depth is the final area of the tyre to be checked with owners advised to ensure their tyres comply with the UK’s minimum tread depth requirements. As well as a reduction in road safety, failure to meet these requirements could result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre.
“All of these checks are very quick and easy to perform, but if you’re in any doubt about the condition or roadworthiness of your tyres, then don’t hesitate to seek the advice of a qualified professional,” adds Jackson.
