NASHVILLE, Tenn. – This year INFINITI celebrates 30 years of looking forward. Since its launch in November 8, 1989, INFINITI has introduced new technologies, daring designs, and innovations that have delivered significant advances in the automotive industry. The brand now lays out its future vision as it moves into the era of electrification.

Horizon Task Force
INFINITI was conceived from an exclusive team in Japan called the Horizon Task Force, established by Nissan Motor Company in 1985 to occupy a void in the luxury car segment. The brief, ‘Luxury, redefined’, led to the creation of a brand which placed greater importance on delivering a personal and rewarding driving and ownership experience than any other premium car maker.

More than simply selling a car, INFINITI has always offered a total ownership experience. This meant being the first vehicle brand to offer loan vehicles to owners dropping their own cars off for service, as well as trip interruption protection and roadside assistance. INFINITI blazed a trail when it introduced these ownership benefits in 1989, many of which are now taken for granted by buyers in the volume and premium segments. INFINITI maintains this ethos today, offering customers an award-winning ownership experience which has evolved to meet changing customer needs and expectations in key markets around the globe.

World-first technologies
For 30 years, INFINITI has had technological innovation at its core, with a history of developing world-first technologies that have enhanced owners’ driving experiences for the last three decades. The brand remains true to this ideal today.

From launching the world’s first fully-active suspension in 1989, INFINITI has since introduced a series of world-first driver assistance technologies such as the RearView Mirror or back-up camera (2001), Lane Departure Warning (2005) and Around View Monitor (2007).

This innovation has extended to the powertrains found in INFINITI cars, such as the brand’s award-winning naturally-aspirated, performance-hybrid and twin-turbo V6 engines. Most recently, INFINITI launched the world’s first production-ready variable compression ratio engine, dubbed VC-Turbo.

INFINITI now enters its fourth decade with a renewed vision for innovation in which driver empowerment goes hand-in-hand with high-performance electrified power. Future models will offer drivers a choice of electrified powertrains as the brand embraces new technology to propel its vehicles. These comprise fully-electric powertrains, as well as a gas-generated EV system in which a VC-Turbo engine generates electrical power delivered to all four wheels through a pair of high-output electric motors (known in Nissan as e-POWER). These electric all-wheel drive (e-AWD) powertrains will deliver the high performance and complete range confidence that buyers are coming to expect from premium car manufacturers. The brand’s new ‘two powertrains, one platform’ approach to model development will also see the roll-out of dedicated platforms which can accommodate both fully-electric and gas-generated EV powertrains.

Electrified by design
Throughout INFINITI’s 30 years in existence, design has been a crucial factor in the popularity of its cars, and the reputation INFINITI has established. From the brand’s launch to the present day, cars such as the Q45 and the FX have broken the mold with powerful, elegant, segment-defying designs.

Powertrain electrification will also lead to a revolution in design too. INFINITI’s new form language for the era of electrification, ‘powerful serenity’, will lead to the creation of production cars that look as progressive, serene and powerful as their electrified powertrains. Inspired by the culture and modern architecture of Japan, INFINITI’s home country, the brand’s designers are working on a series of striking, expressive designs.

Due in the early 2020s, these cars are informed by the brand’s most recent concept vehicles, such as the 2019 Qs Inspiration and QX Inspiration. With a memorable visual identity, and spacious, lounge-like cabins enabled by new electrified powertrains, future INFINITI designs will continue to challenge accepted norms in the same way the brand’s cars have always done.

ELECTRIFICATION AND THE EVOLUTION OF INFINITI DESIGN

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As INFINITI looks to the future and the roll-out of a series of electric and electrified vehicles, the brand will also see a change in the way its cars are designed.

Over the three decades since INFINITI was first established, the design of the brand’s vehicles has transformed. Cars have evolved as tastes and expectations have changed, and as new trends have emerged, such as the rise in popularity of SUVs and crossovers. Innovations in assembly techniques, vehicle architecture, and aerodynamics have also played a role in progressing the look of INFINITI vehicles.

Despite these changes, design adaptations have been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Vehicle platforms and the design on top have predominantly revolved around a car’s powertrain – the internal combustion engine – accommodating an engine, fuel tank, transmission and drive shafts.

Everything in proportion
Powertrain electrification, however, marks a significant moment in car design, with designers no longer shackled by the mechanical layout of a traditional powertrain. Not required to design a vehicle around the internal combustion engine, propshaft, fuel tank or transmission, designers have the freedom to offer more efficient packaging and new vehicle proportions.

As it creates its next generation of vehicles, INFINITI is seizing this opportunity, echoing the character of powerful and serene new electric and electrified powertrains in the very design of its cars. While the aesthetics of the brand’s cars have always been defined by the engines under the hood, future designs will hint directly at the potency and character of INFINITI’s electrified powertrains.

Fundamental to this is a shift in the very proportions of the vehicle. INFINITI’s famous V6 gasoline engines have historically resulted in a long hood and a cab-rearward silhouette. In future, electrification will cause an evolution in the structure of the car, with low-mounted batteries likely to raise the driving position – while lowering the center of gravity at the same time.

The 2019 INFINITI Qs Inspiration Concept, for example, introduces a distinctive new body style which challenges the accepted ‘three-box’ sedan layout. Previewing a future production vehicle from the brand, the concept’s electrified powertrain presents the notion of a sports sedan which is as engaging and enjoyable to drive as any conventional car. With a low center of gravity and powerful e-AWD system, paired with a commanding, elevated driving position, the car suggests how electrification could allow INFINITI to reinvent the ‘traditional’ sports sedan for the future.

Ma
As vehicle proportions evolve, so too will the design details. Signaling the nature of new electric or electrified powertrains, INFINITI is adopting a new ‘Powerful Serenity’ form language for the era of electrification. Inspired by recent concepts such as the QX Inspiration and Qs Inspiration, future INFINITI models will look as progressive, seamless and powerful as their electrified powertrains. This form language will be infused with Japanese DNA, drawing upon the culture and modern architecture of INFINITI’s home country.

The brand’s designers took inspiration from the Japanese spatial concept of ‘Ma’, described as an emptiness full of possibilities, potential and anticipation. Applied to INFINITI’s upcoming electric vehicles, designs will emphasize the smooth, muscular spaces between the sharp, sheer lines of the bodywork, building visual anticipation for the electrified performance within. What happens between these lines is truly expressive; empty spaces which carry the loudest message. Utilizing the ‘Ma’ philosophy will ensure all future INFINITI cars feature svelte, graceful and uncluttered designs. Further Japanese influences will include body surfaces and creases inspired by origami, the Japanese art of folding paper, and technical ‘kimono fold’ patterns, inspired by the straight lines that typify modern Japanese architecture.

This form language serves a practical purpose, too. With no cool air required to cool an engine, future INFINITI models will do away with traditional air intakes at the front of the car. Instead, cars will display the outline of a grille, proudly bearing the company’s logo, while air will be channeled around the body for aerodynamic efficiency, essential for helping to preserve battery life and increasing range.

Lounge-like interiors
Opening the doors on INFINITI’s most recent concept cars reveals the packaging benefits brought by electrified powertrains. With less space required for engines, and the flat packaging of a battery pack beneath the floor, INFINITI will be able to create larger, more spacious cabins – lounge-like interiors which provide more passenger space and comfort.

INFINITI has always sought to create interior spaces that enhance the driving experience, while cossetting passengers. The brand’s recent Qs Inspiration and QX Inspiration concept cars have shown the potential for this approach in future, with beautiful, handcrafted interiors. Spacious and comfortable for occupants, they remain focused on connecting drivers to the car and road ahead, empowering them with a clear view and a powerful, serene driving experience.

The brand’s latest concept vehicles – Q Inspiration, Qs Inspiration and QX Inspiration – each represent INFINITI’s desire to continually challenge tradition and discover ‘the new’. This is familiar territory for a company that launched the FX in 2002, the world’s first sports crossover – and a car which evolved beyond the established ‘two-box’ SUV design trends of the late 1990s.

INFINITI IN THE ERA OF ELECTRIFICATION

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – INFINITI’s future models will offer drivers a choice of electrified powertrains as the brand embraces new technology to propel its vehicles. These include fully-electric systems, as well as a gas-generated EV system (known as e-POWER at Nissan) in which a gasoline engine generates electrical power stored in a battery, which can then be delivered to all four wheels through a pair of high-output electric motors. These powertrains will be matched with dedicated platforms and vehicle architectures, delivering the high performance, range confidence and reduce environmental impact that buyers are coming to expect from premium car manufacturers.

To illustrate the brand’s powertrain development direction, INFINITI has revealed a trio of concept cars in recent years: the Q Inspiration, Qs Inspiration and QX Inspiration. Emblematic of INFINITI’s plans, these three concepts call on forward-looking technology and daring design to reflect the brand’s ethos. Electrification is a natural next step for the company and presents an opportunity for INFINITI to redefine its brand through high-performance, low-emissions models that offer a thrilling yet serene driving experience, and total range confidence.

Two powertrains, one platform
The fully-electric and gas-generated EV powertrain options will be matched with dedicated platforms and vehicle architectures under INFINITI’s new ‘two powertrains, one platform’ approach to model development. This will see the creation of platforms which can accommodate both types of powertrain, with a high level of commonality between each.

Delivering battery power to a high-performance e-AWD (electric all-wheel drive) system, the platforms of all INFINITI’s future electrified cars will be engineered to accommodate a pair of high-output electric motors – one on the front axle, one on the rear. For electric vehicles, the space between the two axles will house a high-capacity battery pack, while gas-generated EV models will feature a significantly smaller battery pack, accompanied by a fuel tank and exhaust system connected to a front-mounted VC-Turbo gasoline generator that powers the battery pack. For all models, drive will be provided solely by electric motors.

Powerful and serene design
Electrification doesn’t just represent a powertrain revolution for INFINITI, but an evolution in design too. INFINITI design will adopt a new form language for the era of electrification. Dubbed ‘powerful serenity’, this will manifest itself in cars that look progressive, serene and powerful, embodying electrified performance. The result is an incredibly expressive design, with expansive, muscular surfaces and clear, concise lines inspired by origami, the Japanese art of paper folding.

Unshackled from the need to accommodate an internal combustion engine as the principal means of propulsion, the physical proportions of future INFINITI vehicles can be transformed. Engineers have more freedom configuring the mechanical layout of the car, with motor-driven wheels eliminating the need for drive shafts that intrude on cabin space in a conventional car.

The era of electrification will therefore enable INFINITI designers to adapt the proportions of future vehicles and create more spacious, lounge-like cabins. The brand’s new ‘powerful serenity’ form language will give these cars a memorable visual identity – inside and out.

INFINITI LOOKING TO BRIDGE GAP TO MASS EV ADOPTION

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Central to INFINITI’s electrification strategy is the brand’s new gas-generated EV powertrain, which establishes a new propulsion blueprint for many of the brand’s future models. Offering the thrilling, instantaneous, silent acceleration of a high-performance electric car, this new powertrain eliminates two of the perceived obstacles to EV uptake among consumers – range confidence and the practicalities of recharging.

Propulsion is delivered to all four wheels through a pair of high-output electric motors. Power comes directly from a high-discharge, low-capacity battery pack, which is recharged constantly by a three-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline generator based on INFINITI’s revolutionary VC-Turbo variable compression ratio technology. The result is a powertrain which delivers the serene, immediate performance of an electric car, and the convenience of a gasoline-powered vehicle – with significantly reduced emissions.

INFINITI will electrify its portfolio in the next two years, almost every future model from INFINITI will offer drivers a choice of gas-generated and pure EV powertrains.

A bridge to full electrification: one platform, two powertrains
In the future, INFINITI’s new ‘two powertrains, one platform’ development direction will see the creation of vehicles which accommodate both gas-generated and fully-electric powertrains.

INFINITI’s new gas-generated EV powertrain will fit many of the same platform touchpoints as an electric powertrain, with each system delivering battery power to a high-performance e-AWD (electric all-wheel drive) system. The platform of INFINITI’s future electrified cars will be engineered to accommodate a pair of high-output electric motors – one on the front axle, one on the rear.

For electric vehicles, the space between the two axles will be given over to a high-capacity battery pack. Vehicles equipped with INFINITI’s gas-generated EV powertrain will see the same space occupied by a significantly smaller battery pack, fuel tank and exhaust system, with the 1.5-liter VC-Turbo generator located at the front to feed power to the battery pack. In both instances, drive is provided solely by electric motors.

While INFINITI’s new platform will accommodate both gas-generated and full EV propulsion systems, its inherent flexibility will allow the brand to develop a range of models that share many of the same components. The shared use of sub-assemblies, such as suspension and electric motor mounting units, will see the brand benefit from both development and production efficiencies. The new platform will also make it easier for INFINITI to develop cars that are ideally suited to specific market requirements.

“This approach to powertrain and platform development will result in vehicles which offer greater cabin space and refinement, and addictive accelerative performance from a powerful e-AWD system,” comments Rigaux. “The high level of commonality between the two powertrains also creates efficiencies during the development process for each new car, giving us the flexibility to offer drivers the powertrains they want.”

Electric cars powered by gasoline: how it works
INFINITI’s new gas-generated EV powertrain will see the introduction of a series of electric cars powered by gasoline. Power is provided directly to two high-output electric motors – one on each axle – by a battery pack located beneath the floor of the cabin, varying in capacity from 3.5 to 5.1 kWh depending on model.

As an electric car powered by gasoline, the character of the power delivery is as addictive, smooth and serene as in a high-performance battery electric vehicle. With instantaneous, electrifying responses to accelerator inputs, the electric motors provide their maximum torque from 0 rpm. The powerful motors deliver a total power output of between 185 and 320 kW (248 hp to 429 hp), depending on the vehicle. Acceleration, as in any electric vehicle, is totally linear, with higher-powered versions of the powertrain able to accelerate from 0-to-62mph in around 4.5 seconds. Furthermore, the driver and passengers won’t experience the same ‘shift shock’ often associated with changing gear in a conventional hybrid or ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle.

The battery pack is recharged constantly by the beating heart of the powertrain: INFINITI’s new ‘MR15DDT’ engine. This three-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline generator – the first-ever application of this engine – uses INFINITI’s VC-Turbo innovative variable compression ratio technology, delivering a continuously variable rate of charge to the battery.

Crucially, the use of a gasoline generator means these vehicles will never need to be plugged in for hours to recharge. Indeed, they won’t have a charging port at all. The powertrain requires only a short stop at a gas station to refill the fuel tank, removing concerns about range.

Despite the high level of performance on offer, emissions for vehicles featuring the new gas-generated EV powertrain will be significantly reduced compared to existing vehicles from the brand, and other ICE vehicles offering similar power and performance. Importantly, the system breaks the historic link between city driving and higher emissions, with the MR15DDT generator having to work less at low speeds to power the battery pack. The result is lower emissions and improved driving range in urban environments, where emissions for ICE vehicles are generally higher.

Serene Performance: Isolating the MR15DDT Generator
INFINITI vehicles equipped with the gas-generated EV powertrain will feature a series of advanced and world-first technologies and features to create the quiet, refined ride associated with conventional electric vehicles.

One of the most striking innovations is a world-first independent mounting system for the MR15DDT generator system beneath the hood, ensuring that engine noise and vibrations are virtually unnoticeable at any driving speed. To maintain calm and serenity in the cabin, the engine and electric motors are fully encapsulated to reduce audible engine noise and motor whine. The engine’s independent mount system features fluid-filled mounts, designed to absorb any further vibrations that it may otherwise send through the body.

The MR15DDT VC-Turbo engine itself is uncommonly smooth, with significantly reduced noise and vibration levels compared to conventional in-line engines. This is a result of its multi-link design, where the piston connecting rods are almost vertical during the combustion cycle, rather than moving wider laterally as they would in a traditional crankshaft rotation. This represents the ideal reciprocating motion, and entirely negates the need for balance shafts found in other in-line engines.

Inside the cabin itself, INFINITI’s gas-generated EVs are expected to offer Active Noise Cancellation, which will further counter any low frequency noises from the engine and road by producing opposing sound waves. This neutralizes unwanted noises in the cabin, and ensures a quieter, more peaceful ride.

These engine isolation and active sound control measures mean the system will never be more audible than any residual wind and road noise generated through driving. Combined with quiet tires, carefully tuned suspension systems, acoustic glass, and other passive soundproofing measures, vehicles equipped with the new gas-generated EV powertrain will offer a supremely serene ride, whatever the conditions.

INFINITI: 30 YEARS OF CHALLENGING CONVENTION

1985
Brand – The INFINITI story began in 1985 with the formation of Nissan Motor Company’s top-secret “Horizon Task Force”, to create a new performance luxury brand.

1989
Product – On January 11, The Q45 and the M30 were the first cars introduced by INFINITI at the 1989 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Q45’s distinctive minimalist styling featured a confident design that allowed it to do away with traditional cues like oversized front grilles and exotic wood interiors. The Q45 was powered by a high-output, 278-horsepower 4.5-liter V8 engine that was class-leading at the time. The Q45 offered innovative features including available full-active suspension, Bose® sound system, power adjustable front passenger seats, one-touch power windows, digital climate control and keyless entry.

Launched as a companion to the Q45 sedan, the M30 was also part of INFINITI’s launch in 1989. The luxury sports coupe was powered by a 162-horsepower, 3.0-liter SOHC V6 and 4-speed automatic transmission. It also had an innovative adjustable suspension system. 

Brand – On November 8, the INFINITI brand debuted with the promise to create a new relationship between the car and driver. INFINITI simultaneously opened 51 dealerships across the US.

Brand – INFINITI gained recognition as an industry leader in customer satisfaction following the launch of Total Ownership Experience® (T.O.E). The sum of T.O.E cannot be comprised of a list of offerings and is embodied in a “customer first attitude”.

Technology –The Q45 became the world’s first production car to feature Hydraulic Active Suspension, a ground-breaking technology ahead of its time.

Product – The INFINITI G20 was first unveiled to customers in September 1990.

1991
Product – Launched initially in 1989, for its second model year, the INFINITI M30 was also available as a convertible, featuring an electric canvas top with fully automatic, one-touch operation.

Product – Marked the debut of the second luxury sedan, the INFINITI J30 at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

1993
Product – Arrival of the Q45t, a new Touring model, from the flagship Q45. The Q45t had available DBS wheels.

Product – For the 1993 model year, INFINITI launched its second luxury sedan, the J30. Powered by a 3.0-liter DOHC V6 engine producing 210-horsepower, the J30’s distinctive rounded design featured a sloping roofline and deck, which foreshadowed the four-door coupe styling trend. Its interior also had an elegant yet sporty feel with cockpit style controls combined with Italian leather-appointed seating. The J30 was also available as a Touring model with four-wheel steering and BBS wheels.

1995
Awards – J.D. Power and Associates ranked INFINITI as “Best Overall Car line in Initial Quality”

Awards – The INFINITI V6 (VQ) is named to Wards 10 Best Engines for the first time. Designed for optimal power, torque and fuel consumption, the VQ ranks as one of Wards 10 Best Engines for 14 years – an unrivalled achievement. The VQ was the predecessor of the INFINITI Twin Turbo V6 launched in 2015. The lightest, cleanest and most advanced V6 engine INFINITI had produced to date.

Product – Debut of the INFINITI I30 as a sketch at the Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) at the 44th annual Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California. The I30 went on sale in 1996, positioned between the G20 and the J30.

1996
Awards – J.D Power and Associates ranked Infiniti #1 in its Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI)

Product – INFINITI launches its first-ever mid-size luxury SUV, the QX4. This vehicle offered the luxury appointments our customers demanded, along with the versatility and durability of a state-of-the-art sport utility.

Product – With the introduction of the original Q45 in late 1989, INFINITI proved to the motoring world that luxury had less to do with tradition and more with how the driver and passengers feel. In creating a new Q45 for the 1997 model year, INFINITI worked to add a higher level of luxury and security to its flagship sedan.

1999
Technology – INFINITI engineers developed the revolutionary front-midship, or “FM,” platform, which placed the engine slightly behind the front axle for better weight distribution. The FM platform design, derived from racing technology, also places a strong emphasis on aerodynamics, especially on the control of airflow under the body.  Combined with the upgraded version of the now legendary VQ-series 3.5-liter V6, INFINITI continued its reputation for performance.

2001
Technology – INFINITI introduced the RearView Monitor, or back-up camera, on the 2002 INFINITI Q45. This type technology was eventually mandated on all cars sold in the U.S. in 2018.

2002
Product – INFINITI launched the iconic G35 sports sedan. This vehicle was the total package of beautiful design, new technology, driver-oriented performance and a high level of luxury. Taking full advantage of the FM platform’s long wheelbase and wide track, the G35 interior offered premium space, premium comfort and premium utility. It would go on to be named the 2003 Motor Trend Car of the Year.

Product – INFINITI introduced the first-ever M45, which was only available with a standard 4.5-liter V8 producing 340 horsepower. This vehicle was positioned between the flagship Q45 sedan and the G35 sports sedan.

Product – INFINITI brought an all-new Q45 to market. This completely redesigned, third-generation model had more than two dozen enhancements from the previous version, including a higher numerical final drive gear ratio for a better acceleration feel.

2003
Product – At its debut in 2003, the INFINITI FX became one of the industry’s first performance crossovers. The FX combined the best attributes of a sports car with those of an SUV. Based on the legendary platform of the INFINITI G sports coupe and sedan, the rear- or all-wheel drive FX was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 or 4.5-liter V8 engine.

Technology – The original FX offered many advanced technologies such as DVD-based GPS navigation, satellite radio, traffic-sensing cruise control, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and, in 2005, INFINITI’s world-first Lane Departure Warning system. In 2007, the FX was the first to have INFINITI’s pioneering Around View Monitor system.

Awards – J.D Power and Associates ranked INFINITI highest in the 2003 Customer Service Index (CSI) study for the third time.

2004
Product – INFINITI launched an all-new QX4. This QX4 was available in 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive, featuring INFINITI’s advanced All-Mode 4WD system. The All-Mode 4WD system provides a superior driving experience on and off the pavement, utilizing all-wheel drive technology derived from Nissan’s world-class Skyline GT-R sports coupe (rather than traditional truck-based systems). All-Mode 4WD was designed to instantly distribute torque to the front wheels (up to 50 percent can go to the front wheels on demand) resulting in optimal traction with improved fuel economy and enhanced cornering capability.

Technology – INFINITI added Brake Assist with Preview Braking to its Intelligent Cruise Control feature. Brake Assist with preview function was designed to help improve brake response. Whereas normally braking is activated only when the driver recognizes the need and moves his or her foot to activate the brake pedal, the preview function utilizes the ICC sensors to identify sudden braking situations (by sensing the vehicle ahead in the same lane and the distance and relative speed from it) and “pre-pressurizes” the Brake Assist system before the driver steps on the brake pedal. This helps maximize braking response and performance by reducing the normal brake system activation time lag.

Product – For almost as long as there has been an INFINITI Motor Company, a sports coupe has been integral to its model line. The INFINITI G Coupe arrived in 2003. Sharply styled and track ready, the rear-drive G Coupe was built off INFINITI’s storied front midship platform where the engine is moved back towards the rear of the engine bay, which in turn improves the weight distribution platform. The original G35 Coupe was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine – with a horsepower rating of 280 – mated to either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.

Awards – The G Coupe was Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year” in 2003, and it was featured as one of Car and Driver’s “10 Best” in 2003 and 2004.

2005
Technology – INFINITI’s Lane Departure Warning on the 2005 INFINITI FX, designed to help address the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) findings that showed more than half of all traffic fatalities were due to some type of lane departure. INFINITI then expanded and enhanced its warning system with the world’s first Lane Departure Prevention system on the 2008 INFINITI M, which helps the driver bring the vehicle back into the lane of intended travel.

2007
Product – Previewed at the New York Auto Show as the INFINITI EX Concept, the production model, INFINITI EX35, was first debuted at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

2008
Technology – INFINITI was the first automotive manufacturer to offer an Around View® Monitor on the 2008 INFINITI EX35, a four-corner, virtual 360-degree, bird’s-eye view of the vehicle when parking. This driver aid was later enhanced by adding Moving Object Detection, which can help alert drivers to the presence of animals, pedestrians or other moving objects around the parking vehicle.

Technology – In 2008, INFINITI expanded Lane Departure Warning and enhanced its warning system with the world’s first Lane Departure Prevention system on the 2008 INFINITI M, which helps the driver bring the vehicle back into the lane of intended travel.

2009
Product – INFINITI introduced a convertible to its award-winning line of G sports sedans. The G37 Convertible featured a three-piece folding hardtop and 325 horsepower 3.7-Liter VVEL V6.

Product – The INFINITI JX Concept world debut at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was closely followed by the world premiere of the production JX35 at Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Brand – In March 2011, INFINITI announced a strategic partnership with Red Bull Racing in Formula One as a manor partnership agreement to build awareness for the burgeoning brand.

Brand – August 23, 2011, INFINITI joined the Guinness World Records for the world’s fastest accelerating production full hybrid at the United Kingdom’s Santa Pod Raceway. CAR Magazine journalist, Tim Pollard drove the vehicles down the quarter-mile dragstrip in 12.895 seconds. The official Guinness World Record adjudicators claimed 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time for the Infiniti M35h is 5.5 seconds.

Technology – INFINITI launched the M35h, the brand’s first vehicle to feature Direct Response Hybrid® technology. At the time, it was the only car available with more than 350 horsepower and 30 mpg.

Technology – INFINITI introduced Blind Spot Intervention® (BSI) on the 2011 INFINITI M. Engineered to alert the driver of a vehicle in the adjacent lane during lane change maneuvers, BSI can help the driver bring the vehicle back into the lane.

Technology –  An advanced Hydraulic Body Motion Control Hydraulic Body Motion Control system was available on both 2WD and 4WD models of the QX56.The system helps to reduce body lean in turns, resulting in improved ride comfort for passengers in all three rows. Suspension travel is automatically controlled by hydraulic chambers integrated into each shock absorber. This enables the system to vary suspension travel independently on either side of the vehicle, thereby counteracting body lean and creating a luxurious, flat ride previously unavailable to drivers in this segment.

2012
Brand – In December, 2012 INFINITI announced the rollout of a new product nomenclature beginning with the Q50, an all-new premium sports sedan unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2013. The nomenclature would be implemented for all vehicles starting in the 2014 model year.

2013
Technology – INFINITI Backup Collision Intervention™ system was first introduced on the 2013 INFINITI JX, detecting cross traffic and large stationary objects behind a vehicle when backing up and can both warn the driver and engage the brakes momentarily to help the driver avoid an impending collision.

Technology – In 2013, INFINITI became the first automaker to introduce a “steer-by-wire” system in a production car. The 2014 INFINITI Q50 offered INFINITI’s Direct Adaptive Steering™ which, transmits steering inputs electronically instead of mechanically, providing quicker and more precise response, as well as unsurpassed levels of customization. Direct Adaptive Steering enabled the driver to personalize steering modes, effort and response, while reducing the transmission of negative feedback from rough roads through the steering column.

2014
Technology – A world’s first system, INFINITI’s Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW), which was first introduced on the 2014 Q50, can warn the driver of risks that may be obscured from the driver’s view. PFCW can not only sense the relative velocity and distance of a vehicle directly ahead, but also of a vehicle travelling in front of that, alerting the driver to slowing or stopped traffic directly ahead.

Technology – INFINITI’s Active Lane Control system, first offered on the 2014 Q50, senses unintended lane drift and can automatically make slight changes to the tire angles and steering wheel torque, helping the driver to make fewer manual steering corrections in freeway driving situations.

Brand – In September, 2014 Nissan formally announced a joint venture with China’s Dongfeng Motor Company, eventually selling locally produced and internationally imported vehicles.

2015
Product – INFINITI’s first, premium active compact, the Q30 premiered at Frankfurt IAA in September 2015

Product – The INFINITI QX30, the premium active crossover, followed the global premier of the Q30 that year, with a simultaneous debut at the 2015 Los Angeles and Guangzhou international motor shows.

2016
Brand – INFINITI becomes technical partner to the Renault Sport Formula One Team

Awards – Ward Autos 10 Best Engines: the 3.0L V6 Twin-turbocharged 400. Introduced on the Q60 and Q50, the INFINITI VR Engine, is a compact and lightweight 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine and until the VC-Turbo, the most advanced V6 engine INFINITI had offered, striking an ideal balance between drivability, efficiency, and performance.

2017
Product – A radical reinterpretation of the Q60 Coupe, Project Black S was revealed in at the Geneva International Motor Show. The prototype was a collaboration with then named, Renault Sport Formula One Team, featuring Formula One-inspired technology to explore a new high-performance line for INFINITI.

Technology – The INFINITI VC-Turbo engine, the world’s first production-ready variable compression ratio engine,  made its production debut on the new QX50. The unique variable compression technology represented a breakthrough in combustion engine design and a bridge to INFINITI’s future electrification product line.

Technology – Introduced on the INFINITI QX50, ProPILOT was introduced as the umbrella term under which all future INFINITI autonomous drive support technologies would be based and represented the first step in their development. The technologies were designed to support the driver in identifying and responding to other road users and potential hazards. Drawing on inputs from radar and camera to help read the road ahead and monitor the position of vehicles in front, the system allows the driver to react accordingly.

Product – A sleek, open-wheeled electric retro-roadster, the Prototype 9 was unveiled at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The Prototype 9 is a celebration of Nissan Motor and INFINITI’s ingenuity, artistry and craftsmanship. Its design represents a reimagining of a 1940s race car with time-honored production techniques employed to realize its retro design, while the vehicle’s advanced electric motor previews INFINITI’s electrified future.

2018
Awards – INFINITI ranked No.1 overall in 2018 J.D Power Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI)

Brand – INFINITI’s electrification strategy is announced. INFINITI will offer a mix of pure electric vehicles (EV) and e-POWER vehicles –demonstrating the full range of low-emission vehicle technology available to INFINITI as the premium brand of Nissan Motor Company.

Product – The Q Inspiration was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show, Detroit. The first of the Q Inspiration lineage, the concept car previewed a new generation of INFINITI vehicles. At the time, the Q Inspiration Concept proposed how an innovative VC-Turbo powertrain, next-level autonomous drive technologies, and a unique human-centric interior could enrich the experience of drivers in the mid-size sedan segment.

Product – Bridging past and future, the INFINITI Prototype 10 presented the spirit of early speedsters for an era of electrified performance. Revealed at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the concept represented a physical manifestation of INFINITI’s creative and ambitious plans for electrified performance.

2019
Product – In January 2019, INFINITI presented the first electrified INFINITI SUV concept, the QX Inspiration at Detroit Auto Show. The INFINITI QX Inspiration is a mid-sized SUV concept previewing the brand’s first fully-electric vehicle. The design study previewed the brand’s plan to launch a range of high-performance electrified vehicles, promising an engaging drive with range confidence. The INFINITI line-up of the future will consist of a range of electric, e-POWER and performance hybrid vehicles.

Brand – INFINITI announced its global headquarters would return to Japan, enabling the brand to realize more synergies with Nissan Motors while retaining its identity as an independent brand.

Product – The Qs Inspiration, a sports sedan for an electrified future unveiled at Auto Shanghai, is a sports sedan concept developed for the electrified era. It offers a new perspective on sports sedans with an elevated driving position and high-performance electrified all-wheel drive (e-AWD) power. Representing INFINITI’s desire to continually challenge tradition, the Qs Inspiration previewed a forthcoming INFINITI production model and hints at the company’s electrified future, in which the brand will offer electric and e-POWER powertrains across its line-up. The concept’s flexible architecture was developed to accommodate high-performance electrified powertrains, enabling INFINITI’s designers to reinterpret traditional ‘three-box’ sedan design, with the freedom to experiment with the exterior proportions and create a spacious, lounge-like interior.

INFINITI has developed a new-generation infotainment system for its key 2020 models. With the 2020 model year updates for Q50, Q60, QX50 and the flagship QX80, owners in selected regions will have access to an array of new functionality. The HD twin-screen system, which keeps the name ‘INFINITI InTouch‘, will improve the driving experience and keep motorists better connected while on the road.

With INFINITI InTouch, vehicles with Navigation become a Wi-Fi hotspot, with up to seven devices able to connect at any one time, meaning all passengers can stay online without using up their data allowance on a personal device*.

Furthermore, owners can more conveniently update their vehicle infotainment systems. INFINITI InTouch enables drivers to complete over-the-air updates, including maps, when connected to their home Wi-Fi network. The updated navigation system will also keep drivers moving with detailed real-time traffic information, dynamic rerouting based on live traffic conditions, and seamless turn-by-turn directions.

Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto will feature as standard on 2020 INFINITI models that adopt the updated system**. Users can connect compatible smartphone via USB to easily access a range of apps and selected smartphone features on the car’s infotainment touchscreen, including making calls, sending and receiving messages, navigation and listening to music. For Apple users it’s easier than ever to enjoy all the features of their iPhone while keeping their hands on the steering wheel with Siri Eyes Free. Drivers can use voice commands to control Siri Hands Free and operate their smartphone, meaning they don’t have to look at the touchscreen to change a track, or make a phone call.

For models that feature INFINITI InTouch with Navigation, functionality expands to incorporate 3D maps, Street and satellite view imagery and Destinations by Google®, making it easier to select and identify points of interest.

INFINITI InTouch also features an improved interface with the adoption of a new, faster processor for an enhanced user experience for drivers. The new Bluetooth® module allows for easier pairing, prioritized connection and higher stability between the user’s smartphone and the vehicle, while the newly adopted HD microphone delivers better voice quality during phone calls and voice commands.  With the Bluetooth® connection manager, drivers can now also select their favorite device from the multiple phones paired with their car – each time the car starts, their phone is prioritized for connection.
