MG ANNOUNCES GLOBAL SUCCESS AHEAD OF 90TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR

  • MG Parent company SAIC achieves record sales of 5.1 million in 2013
  • MG and Roewe global sales reach 230,000
  • MG UK sales increase significantly in November 2013 following successful MG3 launch

MG Parent company SAIC Motor achieved record global sales of over 5.1 million units, an increase of 13.71% on 2012 sales and is the first Chinese automotive manufacturer to exceed five million units in a year. 230,000 units of this extraordinary end of year figure can be attributed to global sales of the MG and Roewe marques.

Global MG sales are set to increase further in 2014, with the opening of a SAIC manufacturing facility in Thailand, enabling the company to expand into South East Asia. Production capacity will be around 50,000 vehicles a year, mainly consisting of MG vehicles.

MG sales continue to increase in the UK, as the historic marque looks forward to 2014 and its ninetieth anniversary year. In the last few months, MG UK has achieved record sales growth due to the launch of the MG3 in late September. MG reported a 257% increase in sales for November 2013 over November 2012, and the SMMT named the historic marque as the second best improver in UK sales for November 2013 over its performance in the previous year. December 2013 was the best December in the company’s history, nearly 30% up on previous year’s sales for these months.

Since the first customer collection in November 2013, 210 MG3s have already been registered in the UK, and sales look to increase rapidly in 2014 with nearly 1,000 orders waiting to be filled. Staff at the Birmingham plant forwent their Christmas celebrations to complete as many orders as possible before the Christmas break. Over 90% of MG3 orders so far consist of the top two trim lines,1 with 40% of customers opting to style their cars from the selection of over one million personalisation options available.

Sales of MG6 GT and Magnette variants are set to improve in 2014 thanks to the decrease in CO2 emissions for Diesel variants (from 139g/km to 129g/km) making the model a viable fleet option for the first time.

Current Q1 offers allow customers to benefit even further as already exceptional levels of spec are now better than ever with free upgrades on all Petrol and Diesel specifications, a saving of up to £3,000, until 31 March 2014.2 Lease offers are also available on all variants from only £199 a month.3

The MG UK dealer network will grow significantly in 2014 following a programme to recruit dealers including sponsoring the prestigious Automotive Management awards in February.  A significant number of new applications have already been received. In recent months new MG dealerships have opened in Woking, Gloucester, Cambridge and two in Sheffield with more to follow in the coming months.
