A stunning collection of home grown classics helped Silverstone Auctions achieve an all-time record at its sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show where it successfully hammered away an amazing 80 per cent of the vehicle lots of on offer, for a premium inclusive total of more than £2.7 million.

The star of the sale was a magnificent 1965 Aston Martin DB5 saloon. Presented in the iconic Silver Birch colour, the car more than lived up to its pre-sale interest, eventually fetching a premium inclusive £362,250, more than £80,000 over its lower estimate.

Not to be outdone was another amazing Aston Martin, a delightful 1958 DB2/4 MKIII, also surpassing its lower estimate by £70,000, selling for £220,800.

“I’m absolutely thrilled by these fantastic results which have helped us to a new record,” enthused Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions. “We worked extremely hard to put together arguably our best ever catalogue, and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to achieve such excellent prices for so many of our vendors.”

Aside from the Aston Martins, other British classics also proved extremely popular. A Lister Jaguar XJS 7.0 litre Le Mans Coupe was the subject of an intensely fought bidding battle, eventually selling for £57,500, more than twice its pre-sale estimate. A 1950 Jaguar XK120 Roadster fetched £86,825, more than £19,000 over its lower estimate; a 1962 Jaguar Mk.II 3.8 achieved £55,200 and a 1960 Jaguar XK150 Fixed Head Coupe also sold above estimate, for £42,837.

Meanwhile two fast Fords proved that iconic 80’s cars could well be among the next crop of classics to significantly rise in value. An amazing 1985 Ford RS200 sold for more than £10,000 over its lower estimate, reaching £105,800, and a 1986 Sierra RS Cosworth, formerly the sole transport of Cosworth co-founder Mike Costin, fetched a healthy £27,600.

However, as well as the strong British results, offerings from further afield also proved extremely popular. Two Ferraris, a 1982 512 BBi and a 1988 328 GTS achieved good prices at £110,400 and £41,055 respectively. And all the way from Argentina, one of the most hotly anticipated cars of the sale, a 1970 IKA Tornio 380S owned by motor racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio, lived up to its pre-sale excitement fetching £28,175.

On top to the sale of the 85 motor cars, Silverstone Auctions also held a lifestyle and automobillia sale, which included fine wines, exquisite leather goods and rare watches. Among the items sold was an ex-Ayrton Senna race suit which was hammered away for £15,730, bringing the total for this part of the sale to further £173,000.

Additionally, Silverstone Auctions even managed to raise £1,500 for BBC Children in Need by charging £5 entry fee to the sale having completely sold out of auction catalogues, due to its incredible popularity.

“I’m really proud of the effort and achievements of my team, not only in this record-breaking sale, but also throughout an incredibly busy year for us,” concluded Nick. “I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has attended one of our sales during the year and I look forward to welcoming you at our next auction which will be held at Race Retro in February.”

Consignments are now being invited into the Race Retro & Classic Car sale which takes place at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire on 22nd February. SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS SECURES EX-FANGIO CAR THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK!

1970 Ika Torino owned by Juan Manuel Fangio
1970 Ika Torino owned by Juan Manuel Fangio

Fans of Fangio – the world’s greatest ever racing driver – will have the chance to bid for one of his cars, just months after one of his racing cars sold for £17.5m, a figure believed to be a record for a car sold at auction.

However, the big difference this time is that potential owners won’t have to dig anywhere near as deeply into their pockets because the car being offered by Silverstone Auctions at its sales at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show held at the NEC on 15th and 16th November, is one of his old road cars and is being offered without reserve!

The model in question is a 1970 IKA Torino 380S that was driven by the great man himself in his life away from the race track.

Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, said: “Silverstone Auctions has been lucky enough in the past to offer lots from the world’s best racing drivers including Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.

“However, Fangio is the king of them all, so we’re honoured to have his 1970 IKA Torino at our NEC Classic Sale and the fact that it is being offered without reserve is sure to only increase its appeal to potential bidders

“Indeed, few would argue that this is a very special item and we are very proud to have been chosen by his family to present his prized model to the global market from our sale in the UK.”

It is believed that Fangio was gifted the Torino 380S by IKA in respect of his contribution to the creation of what is commonly referred to as Argentina’s national car.

Included in the lot are many documents related to Fangio’s ownership of the car, including insurance documents, an Argentinian vehicle green card, handbook, service card and Fangio’s international licence.

Offered in highly original condition, the car is in exceptionally good order, and has been untouched by his family since he passed away in 1995.

“By successes Juan Manuel Fangio can be regarded as the greatest racing driver of all time. His Formula One percentages still eclipse any other driver, so if you want to own a car that has been touched with motor racing greatness and won’t break the bank, then this is surely it,” added Nick.
