SPLASH OUT ON A CLASSIC

‘Take a dip from us’, says Historics, as 50-year old Amphicar moors up for auction

If road congestion removes the enjoyment from summer motoring, classic car auction specialist Historics at Brooklands has just the answer at its forthcoming major sale on Saturday, 31st August, near Weybridge, Surrey.

A 1963 Amphicar, one of 127 classics on Historics’ varied roster, makes traffic jams a thing of the past. Resplendent in fashionable mint green with a contrasting white vinyl roof, it takes the word ‘convertible’ to a whole new dimension, as this amphibious chameleon is as much at home on the water as it is on the motorway.

Less than 4,000 examples of the Amphicar were manufactured between 1961 and 1968 and it is believed that this model, kept in a private collection for the last ten years, is one of only eight in the UK.

Powered by a 1147cc Triumph Herald engine developing 43bhp, transmitted through an all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox, the Amphicar has a top speed of over 70mph on the road, and features fully independent suspension front and rear.

Once eased down the slipway however, its wet weather handling can be explored to the limit, the Amphicar being easily capable of breaking the inland waterway limit. With a cruising speed of 7 knots, courtesy of its integral twin propellers at the rear, it recently demonstrated its remarkable dexterity afloat by towing a waterski champion.

This Amphicar – referred to by an owner as ‘the fastest car on the water and the fastest boat on the road’ – comes to sale with an extensive history file and is fully accessorised… with buoys and life jackets. With light restoration required, it is anticipated to attract strong bidding at its estimate of £30,000-£35,000.

The Amphicar and all 127 consigned vehicles and automobilia will be auctioned at Historics at Brooklands, near Weybridge, Surrey on Saturday 31st August, from 10.00am, with viewing on the previous day.

About Historics at Brooklands

The independent British auction house, Historics at Brooklands, was established in March 2010, by private investors, to provide a highly-knowledgeable and professional resource for the sale and purchase of fine quality classic and collector cars.

All staff are highly experienced within the classic car sector, and are themselves classic car owners and enthusiasts.

With a permanent home at the evocative venue, Brooklands Museum, but independent in ownership, Historics has hosted thirteen auctions to date, including a rare ‘white glove’ sale of a 56-strong collection of American classics from the film ‘Captain America – The First Avenger’. The first auction of 2012 saw Historics present over 100 vehicles at a new winter sale home at Mercedes-Benz World.

In October 2012 Historics opened a second regional office near Devizes, to better service customers located in the south west of England and Wales.
