A vast array of best of breed classics continued Silverstone Auctions’ run of strong results this year, with its May Sale accumulating impressive total sales of £3.4 million.

Returning to its spiritual home at Silverstone race circuit, a fantastic range of classic cars, motorcycles, rare automobilia and luxury lifestyle items were offered, helping Silverstone Auctions achieve an 80 per cent sales rate.

Among the cars on offer was a 2010 Porsche 911 GT2 RS, one of only 16 UK supplied right hand drive cars, the rare supercar sold for a remarkable £281,250, more than £30,000 above its lower estimate.

With Porsche prices remaining strong, a special 1975 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Coupe also fetched a significant sale price. The classic represented an exciting restoration project for any discernible Porsche collector, and it eventually sold for a substantial £146,250, almost 50 per cent more than its lowest estimate. A low mileage 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster 3.2 Turbo Body sold for £144,000, £24,000 more than its lowest estimate.

Ferraris continue to prove popular with buyers. The earliest of the Testarossa series, a 1986 “Flying Mirror” example sold for £95,625. The car had been beautifully maintained regardless of cost, and fetched more than £15,000 above its lowest estimate.

A 2009 Ferrari F430 Scuderia was also subject to much interest from collectors. The modern classic had covered just 85 kilometres from new, and was presented in a unique colour combination of Grigio Medio 791 with an Alcantara red leather interior. Bidding was strong and the car sold for £247,500, almost £30,000 higher than its lowest estimate.

Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, was thrilled to report on another successful sale: “We are delighted to return such great prices to our vendors in our first sale of the year at Silverstone race circuit. Once again, I believe we put together a fantastic catalogue with a wide selection of high pedigree classics.”

Among the British classics on the lot list, a 1952 Land Rover Series I 80” was particularly sought after. The Ken Wheelwright restored car was clearly popular with buyers and the winning bid, at £39,375, was more than £11,000 over its lowest estimate. Another classic that proved popular was a 1961 ‪‎Bentley S2 Continental ‘Flying Spur’. Selling for £101,250, the car was one of just 52 left hand drive models made and amazingly, had been under the same family’s ownership since new.

Proving that low mileage and single ownership will always generate significant interest, a 1977 Jaguar XJC with just 17,000 miles sold for £34,875. Buyers in the packed out auction hall were joined by no less than 14 phone bidders, as well as plenty of online bids and commission interest.

Collectors of modern BMW cars also fought to purchase a jaw droppingly distinctive 2001 BMW Z3 M Coupe. Set to be a shrewd investment, the contemporary classic fetched £36,563 at auction, an amazing £11,563 more than its highest estimate.

Nick concluded: “As both our buyers and vendors leave happy, we would like to thank everyone for attending, and look forward to welcoming even more quality entries into the Silverstone Classic Sale in July.”
