HYUNDAI MOTOR INTRODUCES ‘ENDURO’ LIFESTYLE CUV CONCEPT

  • Urban crossover utility vehicle harmonizes with energetic, athletic lifestyles
  • ‘The Professional Gear’ for drivers wanting to escape the ordinary
  • Design concept is expressed in rugged, versatile yet sophisticated form language

April 2, 2015 – Hyundai Motor is celebrating the world premiere of its all-new design concept, the ‘Enduro’ lifestyle urban crossover utility vehicle (CUV), at the 11th Seoul Motor Show today (Thursday).

The name ‘Enduro’ is derived from ‘Endurance.’ Also, Enduro visually combines SUV looks with rally motorcycles which compete in the world’s toughest rally events. The Enduro is designed as the perfect partner for individuals living in the modern city with energetic, athletic lifestyles. By combining robust forms with bold styling, Enduro releases a sense of adventure and freedom for driver and passengers.

Enduro is ‘The Professional Gear’ for drivers wanting to escape from the ordinary. It features a new interpretation of Hyundai’s design signature hexagonal front grille, now with a lower center of gravity creating a sense of stability. An aluminum aero blade connects the front fender to the grille, giving the Enduro a look of self-confidence.

Seen in profile, Enduro has the look of a crossover vehicle, with raised ground clearance, SUV-style fender cladding and a dark grey garnish to the lower parts of the car, which appear robust and protective, while expressing mobility and agility. The C-pillars are fitted with a unique aerodynamic air-blade to reduce drag and the side-skirts incorporate step bars for easier loading / unloading of the roof rack.

At the rear, the combination lamps form a continuous flow between the C-pillar and the rear spoiler. Like the Enduro’s front fascia treatment, an aluminum bumper spoiler flows from the rear fender and rear bumper creating a visual connection, as well as embracing the fog lamps. Detailed attention to the shaping of the rear fender’s volume has ensured the concept has an impressive road presence and a strong, stable stance.

Emotional, sensual and dynamic a cabin designed with passion

Inside Enduro, the cabin is styled with the same enthusiasm and passion as the exterior. The Hyundai Advanced Design Team worked to create an emotional concept that expresses sensuality and dynamism, through organically interacting lines which generate an intensity that coexists with toughness and sophistication.

The styling of the dashboard and center console feature the eye-catching combination of horizontal and vertical elements, which express sportiness, toughness and endurance. The Enduro’s cabin seems to wrap around the driver’s seat in a manner that creates a dynamic atmosphere, while underscoring the solidity of the vehicle’s structure. Facing the driver, the instrument cluster concentrates a multitude of information in an integrated display that minimizes distraction through its driver-centric design.

Small details of the interior are exploited to reinforce the Enduro’s sporty and upbeat image. Visual elements reminiscent of sports equipment are applied to those cabin components and surfaces which occupants touch. The steering wheel design features the spoke and handle molding of a road bike and the door handles have a lightweight cowl image of an off-road bike. The design of the trunk turns it into a durable, flexible space, with versatile drawer-style compartments that can safely accommodate a broad range of lifestyle sports equipment.

Advanced technology boosts safety and intuitive operation

While engineering the Enduro’s robust look and practical interior, the Hyundai Advanced Design Team also adopted advanced technologies to enhance the driving experience.

Conventional door mirrors are replaced with side- and rear-view cameras connected to a display in the overhead console. The cameras give the driver a fresh line of sight and a much wider field of view, enabling drivers to quickly check the car’s perimeter and oncoming traffic.

Inside the cabin, a new remote control offers dual operation linked to the integrated top / bottom menu display positions in the center stack. Using the ‘top knob’ mode, the control governs the infotainment menu, while the ‘bottom knob’ mode controls the air-conditioning system, heating and ventilation to give more intuitive and comfortable operation. Air-conditioning is supplied to the rear seat occupants, and the rear seat offers a variety of folding options to extend the luggage space, delivering additional practicality and flexibility.

ENGINEERED WITHOUT COMPROMISE: HYUNDAI MOTOR’S MID-ENGINED COUPE CONCEPT ‘RM15’ REVEALED

  • RM15 (Racing Midship 2015) is a mid-engined, lightweight, high-performance two-seat concept
  • Latest concept demonstrates Hyundai Motor’s continued commitment to advanced vehicle technologies and materials
  • Aluminum core structure with CFRP body panels minimizes vehicle weight
  • High levels of downforce at speed, with competitive lift coefficient
  • 2.0-liter T-GDI mid-mounted engine generates 300 ps and 39 kgm (383 NM) torque

April 2, 2015 – Hyundai Motor Company has revealed its latest mid-engined model, an aggressively-styled high-performance coupe concept named ‘RM15’ (Racing Midship 2015). The lightweight two-seat concept, unveiled today at the 11th Seoul Motor Show, makes a confident statement about Hyundai Motor’s passion for performance and its expertise in the development of advanced vehicle technologies.

The RM15 features an aluminum spaceframe as its core structure, with a covering of light, stiff body panels formed in carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), which together help to achieve a significant weight saving compared to a conventional all-steel vehicle. The body panels are painted in the signature colors of the company’s ‘N’ (pale blue, black, red and Hyundai mid-blue) which also feature on the Hyundai WRC i20 rally car.

Based on the Veloster RM shown at last year’s Busan Motor Show in Korea, the new RM15 features a host of modifications that boost the latest model’s performance, handling and efficiency. Total weight is reduced (to 1,260 kg – a saving of 195kg compared to an all-steel structure), weight distribution is more evenly balanced (43% front, 57% rear), the center of gravity is just 491 mm from the ground and aerodynamic downforce is 24 kg at 200 kph, aided by a competitive lift-coefficient.

Power comes from Hyundai Motor’s Theta 2.0-liter T-GDI engine mounted transversely behind the two-seater cabin and ahead of the rear axle, ensuring optimized weight distribution and a low moment of inertia for excellent handling agility and high levels of traction. New, vertical air-intake slots in the flanks of the car, ahead of the rear wheel arches, increase cooling airflow within the engine bay and enhance powertrain efficiency.

The four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine generates 300 ps at 6,000 rpm and drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Strong torque delivery (39 kgm [383 Nm] at 2,000 rpm) helps to reduce the 0-100 km acceleration time to just 4.7 seconds.

Integrated sub-frame (front & rear) and a WRC-inspired roll-cage add extra stiffness to the structure, providing a firm foundation for the aluminum double-wishbone suspension, enabling it to give precise responses and consistent handling characteristics. RM15 rides on stylish 19-inch diameter mono block forged alloy wheels fitted with 235/35 R19 tires (front) and 265/35 R19 tires (rear).

The body panels, named ‘Hybrid Lightweight Body Structure (HLBS)’ provide further demonstration of Hyundai Motor’s expertise with carbon-fiber reinforced plastic structures. With an aluminum core structure and CFRP body panels, the RM15 is light yet extremely strong, with torsional stiffness of 37,800nm/deg.

“The RM15 is another bold statement of the progressive spirit of Hyundai Motor, illustrating what we can achieve when we channel our passion and enthusiasm into a product that is not limited by convention,” comments Joonhong Park, Senior Vice President and head of High Performance Vehicle Development Center at Hyundai Motor Group. “I’m very proud to unveil the RM15 at our home motor show, where visitors have become used to seeing Hyundai Motor confidently give expression to its creative and engineering talents and energies. We intend to demonstrate our progress with high-performance technologies with other exciting prototype projects in the near future.”

Sonata PHEV Hyundai’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle

The Hyundai Sonata PHEV is the company’s first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Although technologically advanced, the PHEV model will behave much like the regular Sonata Hybrid from the driver’s seat. A 9.8 kWh lithium polymer battery pack, roughly six times larger than the Sonata Hybrid’s battery, is expected to give Sonata Plug-in Hybrid an all-electric range of up to 38.4 km (24.0 miles), farther than any other midsize PHEV sedan.

The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid uses a six-speed automatic transmission with Hyundai’s Transmission-Mounted Electrical Device (TMED), a 50 kW electric motor, in place of a torque converter. The motor is 32 percent more powerful than the motor in the regular Sonata Hybrid and allows EV operation at higher speeds. A 2.0-liter Nu GDI gasoline engine lets the Sonata Plug-in Hybrid operate just like the Sonata Hybrid once the onboard battery charge is depleted. Total combined powertrain output is 205ps at 6,000 rpm and recharge time ranges in 3 hours at a 240V Level 2 charging station.
