MERCEDES-BENZ CLK550 and High-Performance CLK63 AMG

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz line of CLK coupes and cabriolets features two new V8-powered models – the CLK550 and the high-performance CLK63 AMG – as well as a new Sport package that sharpens both the appearance and performance of the V6-powered CLK350.

Replacing the 302-horsepower CLK500, the 2007-model CLK550 is powered by a new 5.5-liter V8 engine delivering 382 horsepower and 391 lb.-ft. of torque. Featuring four-valve-per-cylinder and variable valve timing, the new-generation V8 made its first appearance in the all-new 2007 S-Class. Available in both coupe and Cabriolet form, the new CLK550 provides 27 percent more power.

AMG Racing Success Spawns High-Power Production Engine

Marking the debut of the first engine developed entirely by AMG, the 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Cabriolet replaces the CLK55 AMG and is one of five new Mercedes-Benz models powered by the new 6.3-liter V8, which in the CLK63 AMG Cabriolet produces 475 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.

One of the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8s ever, the new engine boasts a wealth of exciting features derived from AMG's highly successful racing efforts. Built almost completely from a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, the new 6.3-liter features four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts with variable valve timing, bucket tappets (rather than rocker arms), an 11.3-to 1 compression ratio and a variable intake manifold. 

A first for a production engine, the cylinder bores feature a twin-wire-arc-sprayed (TWAS) coating, a new process that results in impressively low friction and running surfaces that are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinders. AMG engineers designed the 6.3-liter engine block with an especially rigid bedplate at the main bearings, cast-in steel reinforcements and a sturdy closed-deck layout beside the cylinder head.  The engine shares no parts with Mercedes-Benz V8 engines.  The new 6.3 AMG engine revs freely to more than 7,000 rpm, yet already produces nearly 90 percent of its peak torque at only 2,000 rpm.

Breathtaking Design and Performance Define CLK-Class

The CLK line can be identified by a now-signature Mercedes coupe/roadster design that places the three-pointed star in the center of a low, three-bar grill, and what appear to be four lights are actually two ellipses that form a single unit on each side. The CLK Cabriolet's ability to carry four people and their luggage helps the car succeed in a market segment that has seen some other luxury Cabriolets disappear.

The Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class offers five fun-to-drive 2007 Coupe and Cabriolet models in the U.S. market. The CLK350 Coupe and Cabriolet are powered by a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine which propels the car from 0-60 mph in just 6.4 (Coupe) and 6.7 (Cabriolet) seconds. The new V8 in the CLK550 can accelerate the Coupe from 0-60 mph in just 5.1 (Cabriolet 5.2) seconds.

With its hand-built AMG V8, 0-to-60-mph times for the limited-production CLK63 AMG Cabriolet are well under five seconds.  The CLK63 AMG runs on "staggered" wheels and tires, with 7½ x 18 wheels and 225 / 40 ZR 18 tires up front as well as 8½ x 18 wheels and 255 / 35 ZR 18 tires at the rear.  To balance its added performance, the CLK63 AMG has a sport suspension and more powerful compound brakes.

Available on the CLK350 and CLK550, the new Sport package features exclusive 10-spoke 17" wheels, shorter springs for a slightly lower ride height and sport shocks for crisper handling as well as perforated brake discs and brake calipers that wear the Mercedes-Benz script. The interior is trimmed in black ash wood and black carpets and includes a special instrument cluster complete with white gauges.

High-End Luxury In Mid-Luxury Cabriolets And Coupes
All CLK models come with a stylishly sporty and well-appointed interior. The lines of the dashboard are complemented by its soft-touch surface, providing a luxurious feel and high-quality appearance.

The instrument panel uses an aesthetically pleasing mix of analog gauges and vertical LCD bar graphs for the fuel gauge and the coolant temperature. 

When front occupants close their doors, an electric motor on each side extends an arm that holds the seat belt buckle, making it easier for the occupants to reach them. The belt presenters retract once the seat belts are buckled or after a pre-set time has passed. 

Standard luxury features include digital dual-zone automatic climate control with a sun sensor to optimize air distribution.  The 10-way adjustable power front seats are unique to the CLK line and automatically shift forward when the seatback is tipped forward to allow easier access to the rear seats.

The CLK steering wheel is power-adjustable for tilt and reach. Rocker buttons on its spokes provide an easy and convenient way to control many of the car's systems, and the display in the center of the speedometer allows the driver to view the selected radio station, a personal phone book or navigation instructions when COMAND system with DVD navigation is installed.

 Rain-sensing intermittent windshield wipers and entrance lights add an extra layer of luxury that helps take some of the stress out of daily driving. The two-tiered glove box accommodates the optional six-disc CD changer, leaving a lower shelf for personal items, and the center console houses two cup-holders and a storage compartment.

High-Tech Optional Features
Complete with a high-pressure water jet wash system, high-intensity bi-xenon headlights with active curve illumination feature dynamic adjusters that change the beam angle in response to the car's body movement, helping avoid glare for oncoming traffic.

COMAND display integrates controls for DVD-based navigation, the audio system and cellular telephone.  Other features, including Keyless-Go, iPod integration kit, ventilated seats, an electronic trunk closer and a wood/leather steering wheel, bring even more premium-level luxury to the CLK.

Thoroughbred Chassis
The fun-to-drive CLK line uses a strut front suspension with split lower links, coil springs, twin-tube gas shocks and a stabilizer bar. Using two lower links (rather than one large control arm) can provide better energy absorption in a frontal impact. The rear suspension is the latest version of the patented five-link design used on all Mercedes cars.

Rack and pinion steering delivers precise, direct feel and response while providing an additional safety benefit – the steering rack is mounted on a deformable aluminum subframe so it doesn't impede absorption of crash energy.  The CLK also features speed-sensitive parameter steering, which provides ample power-steering assist for easier parking and low-speed maneuvers, then reduces the boost at speed for better road feel.

The CLK line features a full array of standard Mercedes active safety innovations such as ESP stability control, ABS anti-lock brakes, straight-line ASR traction control, and Brake Assist. The latest Mercedes-Benz safety technology includes dual-stage front air bags, front side air bags and, on coupe models, window curtain air bags.  Cabriolets are equipped with head/thorax side bags in the front.  If an occupant in the front passenger seat is the less than the weight of a typical 12-year-old child in a standard child restraint, the sensors automatically turn off the front passenger air bag.

If any of the CLK's air bags or seatbelt tensioners deploy, the standard Tele Aid system automatically calls an emergency response center over a dedicated cellular line with redundant antennas. If needed, emergency response can be summoned immediately, with full information on the car model and color as well as exact vehicle location (via GPS satellite transponders), for quick recognition by emergency services.

CLK 63 AMG Black Series:

The new CLK 63 AMG Black Series represents a transition from motor sport into pure culture. The fast V8 coupe is visually and technologically closely related to the Official F1™ Safety Car. With its sophisticated cooling and new AMG threaded sport suspension, this two-seater, with 373 kW/507 hp, is predestined for hard campaigning on the racing circuit.

Close Kinship with the Official F1 Safety Car
The CLK 63 AMG Black Series has other strengths developed in the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO. This fast, two-seater V8 coupe is both technically and visually related to the Official F1 Safety Car. The AMG 6.3-liter V8, its performance boosted to 373 kW/507 hp, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds – accompanied by a powerful V8 note from the new AMG sports exhaust system. Optimized for the racing circuit, the coupe features sophisticated cooling design measures that give it maximum stamina no matter how hard it is driven.

There is nothing second-rate about this car's power transmission, suspension and brakes: the modified AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC with its shorter rear-axle ratio ensures even greater agility in all speed ranges. The suspension setup can be personalized with the new AMG threaded sports suspension to alter the suspension level; the rear-axle differential lock provides optimum traction, and the AMG high-performance brake system, with larger composite-technology disks on the front axle, delivers impressive deceleration values. Amazing cornering speeds are guaranteed by the standard tires in size 265/30 R 19 (front) and 285/30 R 19 (rear), which are mounted on particularly light 19-inch AMG forged rims.

Pure Racing: Exterior and Interior
Visually, too, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series shows its close kinship with the Official F1™ Safety Car. A new front apron with large cooling intakes and lateral carbon-fiber outlets, flared wheel arches, and a rear apron with diffusor fins and active rear-axle cooling, point unmistakably to the transfer of technology from motor sport, which has been Mercedes-AMG's corporate philosophy for 40 years now. Inside the car, the uncompromised line continues. AMG sports seats, an AMG performance sports steering wheel with an oval rim and 365-millimeter diameter, and carbon-fiber trim on the center console, the AMG instrument cluster and the doors, all create the functional atmosphere of a genuine racing car.

CLK 63 AMG Black Series:

CLK 63 AMG Black Series: Formula One Technology for the Road
From motor sport to pure culture: The new CLK 63 AMG Black Series based on the Official F1™ Safety Car – the high-performance AMG vehicle that has been providing Formula One safety since 2006. The coupe, optimized for the racing circuit, is powered by an AMG 6.3-liter V8 with its performance boosted to 373 kW/507 hp and 630 Newton meters of torque. Top-rank handling is assured by the sophisticated AMG threaded suspension with 19-inch AMG forged wheels, new steering and the generously dimensioned AMG high-performance brake system with its composite disks. Visually, too, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series clearly shows its descent from the Official F1™ Safety Car: its striking front apron with large cooling intakes, flared wheel arches, diffusor-type rear apron and carbon-fiber airflow breakaway edge, all demonstrate the car's sporting and pur sang pedigree.
The new CLK 63 AMG Black Series is technically and visually oriented towards the Official F1™ Safety Car and thus addresses all sports-car enthusiasts who value high competitiveness. An output upgraded by 19 kW/26 hp accelerates the CLK 63 AMG Black Series from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds – thus 0.3 seconds faster than the standard model with 354 kW/481 hp. The top speed (electronically limited) is 300 km/h.

Mercedes-AMG engineers achieved the increase in power to 373 kW/507 hp by completely redesigning the intake and exhaust systems. The high-revving, naturally-aspirated AMG engine, with its 6208 cc displacement, gets its fresh air via larger-dimensioned intake ducts. The new AMG sports exhaust system with full-length twin pipes stands out with its unmistakable, pleasant AMG V8 sound. Together with a newly calibrated engine control unit, these measures ensure not only efficient load change behavior, but also let this eight-cylinder unit respond to the accelerator with even greater alacrity.


Seven Speeds with More Pronounced Sporting Feel

Power is transmitted through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC. Compared to the standard CLK 63 AMG, the rear-axle ratio of the pur sang special series has been made about six percent shorter – to confer even more agility in acceleration in all speed ranges. For maximum sporting dynamics, the transmission has only the "M" and "S" driving programs; the comfort-oriented "C" is deleted. The driver can switch between the seven gears by using the AMG aluminum shift paddles on the steering wheel, while an indicator in the instrument cluster shows the gear selected at any given time.

In the "M" manual program, shift times are about 20 percent shorter than in "S". Moreover, in the "M" program the driver benefits from the great tractive power of the V8, since there is no automatic downshifting under full load and kickdown; the transmission always remains in the gear selected. When the engine-speed limit is reached, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT does not shift up automatically in the manual drive program – and in this way supports a dynamic driving style on the race track. A visual upshift icon on the AMG main menu signals the recommended gear change.

Optimized Cooling for Top Stamina

The visual appearance of the CLK 63 AMG Black Series shows its racing inspiration. The redesigned front end is descended 1:1 from the Official F1™ Safety Car, and its generously dimensioned cooling-air intakes hint at the sophisticated cooling measures. For greater stamina under extreme operating conditions, a larger main radiator and an optimized power steering cooler, as well as an additional transmission cooler are built into the left front wheel arch. The engine oil cooler is located in the right wheel arch. The cooling measures are complemented by optimized air ducts with lateral openings in real carbon in front of the front wheels. The front fenders are made of high-strength and yet lightweight carbon-fiber composite material. On their flank, a "6.3 AMG" badge hints at the exceptional power of the naturally-aspirated V8. Redesigned side skirts extend to the broad rear fenders, which are in turn connected by a newly developed rear apron. The components taken over from the Official F1™ Safety Car include not only the carbon diffusor fins and the integrated chromed dual tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system, but also a cooler for the heavily stressed rear axle. The separate oil cooler has an active extraction-type fan, which is particularly effective in suppressing temperature peaks. On the trunk lid, a new airflow breakaway edge, also made of carbon, is responsible for reducing lift forces on the rear axle.

Adjustable AMG Sports Suspension for Best Track Performance

Like its counterpart in the Formula One World Championship, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series also has a newly developed and quite special AMG sports suspension. The adjustable threaded suspension guarantees optimum road contact and maximum precision. For competitive driving, the driver can create his personal suspension setup: not only the level, but also the compression and rebound stages of the shock absorbers, front-axle track and camber, and rear-axle track are adjustable.

Both axles have newly developed components like spring links, wheel carriers, thrust arms, camber and torque struts, as well as completely reworked elastokinematics. Compared to the standard CLK 63 AMG, the Black Series has over 75 millimeters more track at the front axle and 66 millimeters more at the rear. Added stiffness under high lateral dynamics is provided by strut braces in the engine compartment and trunk. On the rear axle, a multi-plate locking differential ensures optimum traction, with 30 percent locking effect in the overrun and 10 percent under traction. Acceleration skid control (ASR) and the Electronic Stability Program ESP® are calibrated to meet more intense driving demands.

Lightweight Forged Wheels, Sports Tires for a Perfect Grip

The wheel and tire combination used forms a perfect partner for the AMG threaded sports suspension. Pirelli P Zero Corsa sports tires in size 265/30 R 19 (front) and 285/30 R 19 (rear) permit exceptional grip and amazing cornering speeds – with outstanding characteristics in the wet. The tires are mounted on handsome multi-spoke forged wheels. AMG aluminum wheels in size 9.00 x 19 and 9.50 x 19 are produced using advanced lightweight forging technology. The weight reduction results in improved response behavior from the parameter power steering, which is also modified for greater precision and agility.

AMG High-Performance Brake System with Larger Front Composite Disks

Looking through the tracery of the AMG forged wheels, you can catch a glimpse of the ventilated and perforated disk brakes. The front axle has larger 360 x 36 mm brake disks which were tested in racing. Their rear-axle counterparts measure 330 x 26 mm. Perfect deceleration, optimal apportionment of brake power and enormous fade resistance are hallmarks of the AMG high-performance brake system – even when being tested to the maximum on the track.

Interior with the Functional Feel of a Genuine Racing Car

The transfer of technology from motor sport, a Mercedes-AMG tradition fostered over decades, is equally evident in the interior of the CLK 63 AMG Black Series. This dedicated two-seater sports touring car not only dispenses with rear seats, but with its bucket-type seats, rich carbon trim and black headliner, displays the functional atmosphere of a true racing car – and thus documents 40 years of Mercedes-AMG motor sport history. The new AMG bucket-type seats come without side airbags and are covered in barely inflammable nylon velour with embroidered silver AMG logos. Carbon trim on the center console and on the inner door cladding, also with stamped AMG logos, aluminum door handles and anodized black trim strips, brings a feeling of quality to the interior. On the center console, the specially shaped selector lever and the new, matt-finish start/stop switch add further highlights.

Its diameter reduced by 15 millimeters, the new AMG performance sports steering wheel comes fitted with silver aluminum shift paddles. The steering wheel rim, 365 millimeters in diameter, is flattened on its underside to ensure that the driver of the CLK 63 AMG Black Series always has a perfect seating position and vehicle control.

AMG Instrument Cluster with RACETIMER

The carbon-embedded AMG instrument cluster with its 320 km/h scale furnishes an exclusive ambience and high functionality at the same time. The AMG main menu in the cluster is perfectly tailored to serious racing: it shows the current gear engaged, as well as an upshift recommendation in "M" mode, or alternatively engine oil temperature or battery voltage, as well as the RACETIMER. This last function enables the driver to determine his lap times on a closed course. The RACETIMER stores the time of the fastest lap, average and maximum speeds, and the length of the laps.

Following in the path of the SLK 55 AMG Black Series, the new CLK 63 AMG Black Series was developed in the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO opened in 2006. The first units of the unlimited AMG special series will be delivered to customers starting in June.
