Mazda Motor Corporation established in 1920 is Japan's fourth-largest automaker. Mazda makes cars, minivans, pickup trucks, and commercial vehicles. Models sold by Mazda in the US include sedans (Mazda 3, Mazda 6), minivans (MPV), sports cars (Miata, RX-8), and pickup trucks (B-Series). Mazda has added an SUV to its lineup with the introduction of the Tribute.

Operating from two Japanese and 17 international manufacturing plants, Mazda sells some 330,000 vehicles annually in Japan, and more than 630,000 abroad.

In 2010, Ford Motor Company changed its stake in Mazda Motor Corporation to 3.5 percent from 11 percent. Ford plans to remain one of Mazda's largest shareholders and remains committed to its strategic partnership with Mazda, which spans more than 30 years.

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) controls the US research and development, sales and marketing, and customer parts and service operations of Japan-based Mazda Motor Corporation. MNAO sells or leases its line of cars, trucks, minivans, and SUVs through about 700 dealerships in the US. Formed to strengthen its parent company's hold on the US car market, MNAO is the combination of Mazda Motor of America, Mazda (North America), Mazda Research and Development of North America, and Mazda Systems Services of North America. A separate company, Mazda Canada, distributes Mazdas in that country. Ford owns a controlling 33% of MNAO parent Mazda Motor Corporation.
