Silverstone Auctions once again secured excellent results on behalf of its vendors, selling 72% of classic cars on offer and achieving total sales of £4.9million, in three days of auctions at the Silverstone Classic between the 28th and 31st of July.

A stunning and beautifully original 1958 AC Ace Bristol wowed hundreds of classic car and motorsport enthusiasts who descended on Silverstone Circuit over the weekend, selling for an impressive £249,750, more than £80,000 over its lower estimate.

Achieving a new world record auction price, a low mileage 1989 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI was sold to applause for £30,938 including premium, more than £12,000 over its lower estimate. Drawing nostalgic glances from auction goers, the beautiful car had covered just 7,986 miles in the hands of only one owner and was in exceptional condition.

Showing significant movement in the classic car market, a stunning selection of Series I Jaguar E-Types were in high demand. Selling for more than £48,000 over its lower estimate, a matching numbers and fully restored 1965 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 FHC was hammered away for £123,750 including premium. One of the very earliest cars, a 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster, chassis number 62, was sold for £140,625.

A nut and bolt restored, UK right-hand drive 1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II Fixed Head Coupe also proved popular, finally selling for £118,125, more than £30,000 over its lower estimate.

Speaking just after the sale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale, said: “It’s been another exciting weekend at the Silverstone Classic and I’m delighted to see that so many customers old and new joined us for what was our biggest ever auction. The team put together a great catalogue with a fantastic variety of classic cars that clearly appealed to buyers.”

Some special modern performance classics sold for fantastic prices at the sale, with an incredibly rare 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL70 AMG selling for £51,188, more than £15,000 over its lower estimate. Bought new by none other than Nigel Mansell, a 1984 Audi Quattro sold for £26,438. Original UK, right-hand drive Ferraris continue to prove sought after and a 1994 Ferrari 512 TR, a superb low mileage example, sold for £162,000.

11 competition cars were also sold at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival. Created for Le Mans and one of the most original Porsches Silverstone Auctions has ever seen, a 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GTR, which had been hidden in Japan for 30 years, sold for £495,000.  A 1975 FIA Group 2 Ford Escort BDG Zakspeed Replica, which sold for £57,380, was even raced by its new owner on Sunday at the festival and won its class.

Nick added: “I’d once again like to thank all those who bought and sold with us over the weekend and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming sales.”
