HISTORIC CARS FOR FLYWHEEL AT BICESTER HERITAGE

Heritage_0020

Over 50 individually selected, hand-picked exotic, vintage and classic cars will form the centrepiece of test track demonstrations at the FLYWHEEL Festival at Bicester Heritage on 20th and 21st June, the first major public event to be held at the UK’s best preserved Second World War bomber station – Bicester Heritage in Oxfordshire.

A one-day ticket costing £25 (£30 if bought on the gate) will allow visitors to get up close to feature displays of historic cars, aircraft and military vehicles from the World War One, Inter-War, World War Two and early 1950s periods. In addition live music from singers and bands representing the various eras will add yet more to the atmosphere, while a vintage trade fair will offer period costumes, accessories and souvenirs.

The cars will include Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin and Jaguar C-Type sports cars commemorating the 60th anniversary of the legendary Mille Miglia motor race in Italy, as well as single-seat racing cars of the immediate pre-war and post-war periods. All are ideally in keeping with the armco-free section of the former bomber station’s perimeter track which will be used for demonstrations, offering a view of the cars on an airfield backdrop, redolent of early post war racing and sprint events.

In addition to the spectacle of priceless machines being driven on the test track, road cars from the Edwardian era to the early 1960s will be on show in parades and as part of motor club displays and period-themed areas. In addition, military vehicle enthusiasts and re-enactor groups are planning to take full advantage of Bicester airfield’s unique ‘timewarp’ background of hangars, air-raid shelters and wartime buildings, which remained barely altered between the end of WW2 and the site’s acquisition from the MoD by Bicester Heritage at the end of 2013. Among the vehicles committed for display are World War 2 allied forces, Sherman and Grant tanks.

In the air the weekend will mark the return to Bicester of the sole flying Bristol Blenheim bomber. The aircraft entered RAF service at the airfield in 1938 and Bicester subsequently became the centre of operational training for the type. The FLYWHEEL festival will mark the first return of a Blenheim to its former base in over 75 years and a display each day will be complemented by other wartime aircraft including the iconic Spitfire.

Other flying attractions will include the Great War Display Team, who plan to field a record ten World War One types in a swirling ‘dogfight’ display as would have been seen from the trenches 100 years ago. Meanwhile the free spirit of the 1930s golden age of flying will be represented by the Tiger Nine, all-Tiger Moth flying display team and line-ups of aircraft from the Vintage Aircraft Club and Vintage Glider Club.

“The FLYWHEEL festival celebrates the three parallel themes of motoring, aviation and military endeavour, with attractions covering the Great War, inter-war and WW2, and the early post-war eras” says Duncan Wiltshire, Managing Director of event organisers Historic Promotions. “The event takes the best elements of air shows and historic motor racing to create something new, with close-up access in a very special location.”
