BMW Large Saloon Models (1968-1977)

BMW 2500

In November 1968, production of the big BMW six-cylinder saloons started up. This set new benchmarks with increased driving performance, higher levels of comfort and maximum safety. The BMW 2500 was then considered the entry-level model to the BMW top range class. With a price tag below DM 16,000, it offered 150 bhp, a suspension with a sporty touch and disc brakes allround. It became the most successful representative of the new model Series.

BMW 2800

In November 1968, production of the big BMW six-cylinder saloons started up with the BMW 2500. This set new benchmarks with increased driving performance, higher levels of comfort and maximum safety. From February 1969, another model in the Series of big BMW six-cylinders rolled off the production line. This saloon was luxuriously equipped. Nivomat shock absorbers, a limited-slip differential and a heated rear window were part of the standard equipment for this car.

BMW 2.8 L

In January 1975, the 2.8 litre six-cylinder saloon was launched on the market with a long-wheelbase under the designation BMW 2.8 L. A low volume of units of 5,036 had been built by February 1977.

BMW 3.0 L

In January 1975, the 3.0 litre six-cylinder saloon was launched with a long wheelbase under the designation BMW 3.0 L. Only a few units had been built by February 1977.

BMW 3.3 L

The BMW 3.3 L was the flagship of the big BMW model series. It had a long wheelbase, similar to the long versions 2.8 L and 3.0 L, and extensive standard accessories, enabling the car to offer maximum comfort. Automatic gearbox and radio were standard, as well as the new BMW safety steering wheel.

BMW 3.3 Li

The model range of the new big BMW E3 Series was quickly expanded upwards. 1971 saw the launch of the first saloons with three- litre engines; in 1973, a new luxury version, the BMW 3.3 L, was launched with a wheelbase that was 10 cm longer and a 3.3 litre engine. From 1976, this version was also available with a 197 bhp injection engine as the BMW 3.3 Li. The most expensive BMW (DM 43,000) at the time offered an exciting combination of sporty driving performance and comfort from the luxury class.

BMW 3.0 S

The three-litre model BMW 3.0 S was launched as the top model of the big six-cylinders in May 1971, followed by the BMW 3.0 Si as the injection version in September of the same year. The chassis and bodywork were the same as the BMW 2500/2800. These models were also available with an automatic gearbox on request.
