BMW 327 / 328 Models (1936-1941)

BMW 327 Sports Convertible
BMW entered the realm of luxury manufacturers with the sports convertible of the type BMW 327 at the end of 1937. The exceptionally elegant car, which was supplemented by an equally beautiful coupé in 1938, was based on the chassis and engine of the 326 model. However, the power generated by the new engine was 5 hp greater. The bodies of the sports convertible (Sportkabriolett, also written as Sport-Kabriolet in 1939), which had a small bench seat in the rear as well as two comfortable front seats, were supplied by coachbuilder Autenrieth in Darmstadt.

BMW 327 Sportkabriolett
With the roadster type 327 BMW came before the end of 1937 in the field of luxury car manufacturer. The most elegant car that was in 1938 supplemented by an equally stunningly beautiful coupe, based on the chassis and drivetrain of the model 326, which he exceeded by five horsepower engine performance. The bodies for the Roadster (1939, there was also the spelling sports convertible) that still possessed next two comfortable front seats with a small back seat, provided the bodywork manufacturer Autenrieth in Darmstadt.

With its Type 327 Sports Convertible, BMW made the jump into the group of luxury car manufacturers at the end of 1937. This extremely elegant car, which was joined by an equally handsome coupé in 1938, was based on the running gear of the 320 model and engine of the 326 model, but with an engine developing five horsepower more. The bodies for the convertible, which had a small rear bench seat in addition to its two comfortable front seats, were manufactured by the Darmstadt coachbuilder Autenrieth, already a regular supplier of BMW bodies. The coupé bodies were largely built in Eisenach.

BMW 327/28 Sports Convertible
If customers were attracted by the beautiful BMW 327 sports convertible but found the 55 hp engine output was not fast enough or not exclusive enough for their taste, BMW created the Type 327/28 to satisfy their desires. The exterior of this car was identical with the Type 327 and was initially supplied from April 1938 as a sports convertible (Sportkabriolett, also written as Sport-Kabriolet in 1939). Starting from autumn 1938, it was also available as a sports coupé powered by the legendary three-carburettor engine of the 328 roadster. The car was now fitted with a full synchromesh gearbox from ZF and achieved a top speed of 145 km/h. Just 86 units were manufactured as a coupé from 1938-1940

For customers where the beautiful BMW 327 Sportkabrioletts indeed liked, with 55 hp motor power were too little fast or exclusive, BMW created the 1938 Type 327/28. Externally identical to the Type 327, this car was initially available from April 1938 as a roadster (1939, there was also the spelling sports convertible) and driven from the fall of 1938 as a sports coupe from the legendary three-carburetor engine in the 328 roadster. The now has an deliverable fully synchromesh gearbox from ZF to be switched car reached 145 km / h and was produced as a coupe 1938-40 in only 86 copies.

BMW 328
In the mid-1930s, BMW quietly developed a sports car that was soon to attract a lot of attention. It brought BMW top placings in international racing history - the 328 Roadster.

The 315/1 and 319/1 sports cars had already put BMW among the leading manufacturers of automobiles that were also successful in racing competitions. However, the competition was continually supplying models of increasing power, and the 55 b.h.p. of the 319/1 top model to date was soon unable to keep ahead of the game. On the other hand, in 1935 BMW had only been in the automobile business for seven years and had only been constructing automobiles to its own designs for the past four years. Since the small racing department only had limited resources available, it was necessary to draw on proven technology for a new model.

A more lightweight and more stable tubular frame with box cross members formed the mounting for the front-wheel suspension with lower transverse links and an upper transverse spring. The rigid rear axle had semi-elliptical longitudinal leaf springs. A further increase in power of the 1.9 litre engine with low-mounted camshaft could only be achieved using a new cylinder head with V-shaped overhead valves, but the costs for a completely new design of engine block and cylinder head would have exceeded the budget. The engineers therefore made use of a trick. They simply designed a new head using an aluminium alloy, while the valve timing was controlled from the side camshaft via a reversing lever on the intake side and transverse push rods.

The result was 80 b.h.p., more than adequate to generate a sensation in the important two-litre class. The rear of the bodywork for the new BMW 328 Roadster bore strong similarities to the Type 319/1, but it had a significantly longer bonnet held down by two leather straps, and headlights integrated in the front. Initially, this model was only used for racing from mid-1936 and volume production started up in spring 1937. This sports car quickly developed into a racing legend. There was hardly a race in the late 1930s where one of the top slots wasn't taken by the BMW 328. Special racing versions with special Superleggera ultralight bodies and engines with around 135 b.h.p. won their class at Le Mans and in the Mille Miglia.
Type of body:The BMW 328 was sold only as a roadster in standard form, though 59 chassis were also supplied for special bodywork to be fitted.

Special bodies: Sports convertibles based on the BMW 328, but more luxurious than the series cars, were manufactured among others by Drauz, Weinberger, Gläser, Wendler (also with a hardtop) and the Vereinigte Werkstätten. In addition, two BMW 328 cars with a closed, streamlined body were manufactured at Wendler in Reutlingen.
